World News@lemmy.world•‘Another internet is possible’: Norway rails against ‘enshittification’English
50·19 hours agoCory Doctorow describes the stages of enshittification as follows:
It’s a three stage process: First, platforms are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.
And for good measure he reminds us of the why and how things used to be better:
The pre-enshittification era wasn’t a time of better leadership. The executives weren’t better. They were constrained. Their worst impulses were checked by competition, regulation, self-help and worker power.

315·4 days agoMany women need thise days off for real medical reasons … but you support giving men the same amount of days off just because.
That makes zero sense.
Maybe you should sit down at a table with 20 women of all ages and ask them why they need days off work. I would hope you’d listen to their horror stories.

162·4 days agoSo instead of giving women 2-3 days off per month to deal with menstration, and creating a law that would safeguard women’s employment, judges instead blame women for the ‘hardships’ men would face.

World News@lemmy.world•Why Trump wants Ukraine’s interceptor drones in Iran warEnglish
19·12 days agoThere’s a reason Ukraine is offering its expertise. The country has been shooting down Russian missiles and drones — especially Iran-designed Shahed drones — for more than four years. In January, Ukraine faced an average of 143 Shahed-type drone and decoys daily, intercepting 122 of them, according to a study by the Institute for Science and International Security.
Ukrainian units haven’t just mastered drone defenses, they’ve reshaped the battlefield with offensive drone tactics — as seen last year during Estonia’s Hedgehog drills, where a 10-person Ukrainian Nemesis drone team outmaneuvered two NATO battalions. As Western and Gulf militaries scramble to adapt to Iran’s expanding drone campaign, Kyiv is signaling it is ready to teach others its battlefield lessons.
Key Ukrainian tactics included attacking NATO troops from the rear (where they thought they were safe), surveying allied formations gathered in large groups (often without proper camouflage), mining the approach roads they were taking, and using electronic warfare to turn off key equipment.
Good for them. I’m somewhat saddened to hear that Zelenskiy is sharing info with tRump, but I get it. Maybe this time the orange dipshit will respect Zelenskiy and Ukraine’s mastery of new tactics.

World News@lemmy.world•World’s largest krill harvester at centre of row over ‘blue tick’ sustainability labelEnglish
2·12 days agoIn the first seven months of the 2024-25 season, krill fishing in Antarctica reached 518,568 tons, about 84% of the 620,000-ton limit that, once reached, will force the fishery to automatically close. In one hot spot, the catch through June 30 was nearly 60% higher than all of last year’s haul, according to a report from the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, or CCAMLR, the international organization that manages the world’s southernmost fishery.
Trawling near Antarctica for krill has more than quadrupled in the past two decades and this season, for the first time, it reached its seasonal catch limit, triggering the unprecedented early closure of the remote fishery.
“The vast majority of the krill take is from an increasingly smaller area,” said Capt. Peter Hammarstedt, campaign director for conservation group Sea Shepherd Global, which this year made its third voyage to Antarctica to document the fishery. “It’s the equivalent of a hunter saying that they’re only killing 1% of the U.S.’ deer population but leaving out that all of the deer were shot in Rhode Island.”
