Are there any hard forks or similar to Hyperland that are for Wayland? I was going to try it on my Pi5 (it is my main “messing with random Linux stuff” device that I don’t care if I break something), but then I saw people talking about the far-right/fascist stuff and didn’t bother. It looked nice when I saw people in random videos running it (wasn’t the focus of the videos and just stood-out).

I know there are other well known tiled window managers which I might end up trying since I keep meaning to see how I take to them. The look of Hyperland is nice with some stacked window manager elements if needed (which I imagine other projects also have). I just don’t know which TWM projects are “better” (for starting with coming from only using SWM). Some level of aesthetics would be nice but am fine with adding after install.

People really want those builds/any files from Half-Life Episode 3. The other stuff is just extra.

After going through both my Galaxy 24U and Pixel Tablet initially, I wasn’t seeing the option (was looking for the old “Install from unknown sources” which is in a different location (and per app toggles). I went back and manually disabled and enabled the “Android Developer Verifier” app and then saw the option for “Apps from unverified developers” show up. Then was able to follow the steps (very glad you provided that second source which is what led me to what I did).

So I guess if you don’t see it. First search in your apps that the verifier app is present. If it is, then go into the app info for it and toggle disable and then enable. Willing to accept that maybe I was just blind to it due to the old way of sideloading that made me miss it in Developer Options. But for sure saw it after the toggles. Now I just need to remember to go back tomorrow to set the “indefinitely” option. Curious if this will allow Play Protect to not try to yeet apps if PP is turned back on. I had to turn it off a couple months ago because it kept flagging SyncThing-Fork installed from F-Droid trying to trick me into uninstalling it (which was weird that was the only app it freaked out about out of all the third-party store and Obtainium apps).

I will say at least with those you can still sell them, trade them, whatever. Unlike digital games.

Being able to sell/trade a specific copy of digital media kind of is the one functional use NFTs could be used for (if companies would be willing to treat digital media to be treated like physical media which they obviously like the current setup). Would also kind of need a universal industry blockchain (or some other ledger system) with better scam protections, and be used for the “new” sales for the trades and “used” sales. Which is way more effort than digital media companies would ever care to figure out (especially now) and were able to get away with not being required to treat digital like physical. And the major players don’t have to care about making their stuff DRM-free.

In the case of video media it is worse since there are so many set-top devices that don’t allow offline downloads like the mobile versions of the same apps (mostly since the boxes don’t have storage for it) or ability to use on a home media server (Plex/Jellyfin). So you may have a license to a movie/show but not have access to it if networks are down. And digital audio media has been reverting since a lot of new music can’t be purchased and only streamed. Which is sad since I had some early hope that the digital video stuff would follow how audio was working with a lot of DRM-free options Apple and Amazon managed to “legitimize”. I will give some level of credit to the UV/Movies Anywhere system that allows retaining a supported movie/show if you have accounts on multiple services and any one of them shuts down. But that still requires that stores/studios support it, AND that the core system isn’t the thing shutdown.

Stuff like that is worse than sites only working with Chrome/Chromium. It is infuriating that site reaches deeper for the OS. A website should work so long as the browser is used.

Same, very rarely “disappointed” with FF outside of the core browser (like the days when Chrome could point to how much RAM older FF was stuck using before Chrome became worse). Still used it as default on desktop and laptop since like 03~04, and completely switched on Android when they started allowing limited extensions (and now can basically force almost all).

The sites themselves are what I actually feel extremely disappointed about. Back when I did randomly buy/stream songs/albums from Amazon it would work. But now they pretend to work and then act like my browser “is out of date” (even link the FF site knowing there isn’t an update and pulls the old IE tactic of really pushing “better with Chrome” or whatever). I don’t use the Netflix site, but know that they have intentionally dark patterned using it on FF with fake limits on being 720p, and very much can run 1080p with third-party extensions likely spoofing Chrome/Chromium coded DRM (I am guessing that is what is being done at least).

Just my personal opinions (ranting) without hard data/facts: Which is basically back to the same issue from the IE days. Chromium is better than IE really because it can be used to make other browsers. But is being coded for by sites like IE in how if the agent seen is not Chromium then it hard stops. Which to me just makes the circular feedback that Chromium IS the standard because more people use it, but people use it because non-Chromium browsers “can’t” load the pages they go to. Same applies to extensions being gutted because Google controls basically what gets to still work, and most Chromium browsers don’t host their own extensions stores. Given most people don’t bother trying other browsers because Edge is the default in Windows (so Chromium) or because a long time ago they were told “don’t use IE and use Chrome” by their “tech friends” when IE was getting worse and worse with malware exploits. Younger folks have grown up with Chrome being “the internet” like IE was for folks in the 90s/00s.

A lot of the folks that do intentionally install Chromium “forks” do it for some misc features/layouts while being told sites that work in Chrome will also work. So those folks at least are interested in trying stuff like Brave/Opera/OperaGX after a YouTuber or some source they trust. But would only try FF or browsers based on it if those same trusted sources went hard pushing it, and if major sites they use (that currently artificially don’t work) did work. The moment one site they use enough doesn’t work, then they basically swear off FF and maybe even continue the telephone game of telling their friends/family FF is bad/won’t work. Then the sites continue to code for Chromium because "no one uses FF (or whatever non-Chromium browsers that aren’t Safari).

I tend to still get pulled onto it via search results when the stereotypical specific answer to specific answers are basically from there. But Lemmy has really grown so much since I first found out about it a few years ago (one of the big ditch Reddit waves of course). Still not at the “magical answer to the very issue I need info on” levels as subreddits, but getting closer and closer everyday. Also really cool to get and reply to sources from other Fediverse projects that aren’t Lemmy if you choose to follow them. Just so fun overall.

I have been curious if IPFS would be useful for releases if the trackers keep getting taken down (or another option aside from torrents and Usenet). But aside from installing IPFS a few years ago, I haven’t looked into it. And the crypto parts are a turn-off for folks that hate the crypto-bro stockmarket/scams (which is completely justified to hate). The decentralized part of it is cool.

More related to torrents. It would be cool if Nyaa and other large trackers were to setup i2p versions of the sites. Since it actually helps make the system run faster the more people install the routers.

With all the different decentralized P2P, a lot of spreading out of concentrated server loads could help beyond piracy. If profits/copyright/capitalism weren’t the things holding us back (along with data caps). I wouldn’t mind sharing some of my connection for so many things. Like updates for programs, media I happen to have copies/parts of, or even random files/parts of files that rotate into and off of specially allocated amounts of my drives.

Even Windows has the option for helping updates for the OS to other PCs. But I am not trying to help them with all the shit they pull while making billions (especially if I had a data cap) while not legally able to do the same for general data. If profits/copyright/capitalism weren’t an issue, then stuff like having digital libraries constantly at risk of shutting down and losing everything would basically be a non-issue. If one service pulls out, the data is still accessible via another front-end. I would even be fine with options to donate money to the devs/artists for stuff I use/like in amounts I can afford as I can.

If it does get far enough to be introduced and to actual vote. I am guessing there will be a massive push by Flock to flood news outlets and lobbyists to how “successfully bad guys were caught” or otherwise “prevented.” Probably lock-in on any instance(s) involving children being protected/found. With any and all misleading stats downplaying the actual levels of spying on literally everyone not doing anything illegal (or that children are being scanned and added to those growing databases). And the fucked up cases of false positives that drag those people into court, job losses from being accused/arrested, and financial losses from the first two.

Since I doubt Sony will ever push the blu-ray spec beyond 100GB. It would have been nice to at least have a cart style option since storage on flash/nand storage isn’t the issue it was back in the N64 days when CDs and DVDs stored more for less cost. AI stuff fucking prices and supply aside, it seems like prices for them would have made enough sense. Also seems like it would be less complicated than still having optical drives.

Ranting mostly about media beyond physical game releases below.

Also kind of seems that physical releases of TV and movies could have adapted carts for uncompressed 1080p/2160p. Don’t get me wrong, I love the vibe of optical discs (even with their faults). Just hate that everything is almost completely download (for games) and streaming (for video) only. Non-game media is more frustrating since most set-top players don’t have the DRM-ed periodic phone-home download options that phones and tablets have.

Might as well just make sure it is fully powered off and unplugged so it can’t update in low power mode. If it hasn’t been updated, it might be useful later on if an exploit is found allowing CFW. I haven’t paid attention to the scene much, but old OFW tend to give the best options if found. Only “downside” is online stuff unless options have been found for per-game private servers.

Would be great if there was a feature that detects a clone and start zeroing itself. Or start flipping bits every few seconds/random intervals in a way that just seems like nand in early stages of failing (maybe even give false drive health data). Though I have zero understanding of the cloning processes, and imagine that it would quickly be something they would have their own detectors and mitigations.

But can’t just stop trying to make it harder/frustrating for anyone trying to access all our digital lives. They already get around our rights with how they just go ask the companies like Microsoft to get people’s Bitlocker keys (which even most people seem to not even be aware of having until Windows breaks).

It doesn’t work every time (I am very much not someone that can just switch off), but I have found “floor time” to help as a method of meditating. Initially I was just doing stretches of time for the sake of countering being slumped posture all day without a specific intention of being a sleep aid. Some of us randomly do it on the cold floor at work if physically stressed out, which is why I thought to try it at home in the dark.

Tend to either have some long form video play that I have watched before and find nice for sound, or put buds in and set like a 20~30min sleep timer for podcast episodes I like and marked to never delete in a favorites section of the app. Ended up also finding some buds (Soundcore Sleep A10 for anyone that wants to know) that can auto-stop playback if they detect sleep (guessing they use like a heart-rate sensor). So they can act as an additional stop if I fall asleep before the actual sleep timer (sadly I have misplaced them ATM). Which help silence my own thoughts, and anchor onto the audio (and thoughts get kept to the video/podcast). And use the timer to formerly end the “floor time” or to avoid losing my place.

Only other thing I try to allow myself to drift into thinking about is if I feel like I have tensed-up or periodic moving my head to each side for a few mins each to stretch my neck. I just stare into the back of my eyelids, but sometimes the darkness of the room (or into something covering my eyes) for times that staring into the back of my eyelids feels weirdly stressful in the same way a staring contest does when open (very annoying feeling).

I have a high level (in my understanding) of Aphantasia, which for people that haven’t heard of it, is not being able to “see” imaginations like folks that talk about “imagine a ball of light” or other guided things. Not fully lacking complete ability to “see” things, but ranging from only the idea (nothing) to extremely quick flashes of mostly super low details. So I try to learn how to focus on keeping the flashes a little longer and “see” simple things or pull the image of the room as I would be seeing it from my spot on the floor if my eyes were open. Made some progress here and there, while still not being able to do it outside of these times. Which I think might be helping me start to nod-off into really light sleep where dreams are close to starting.

Which can slip into that weird sudden falling feeling people have sometimes before fully falling asleep. However even if that happens, I can use that as a stopping point for “floor time” and move into the bed and fall asleep soon after. As my mind/body are much closer to whatever state needed for going over the edge of sleep. If the “falling” thing doesn’t happen, I might reach a slightly deeper sleep where I am dreaming but can either still hear the show/podcast in the dream or it is influencing the dream to some in the short time I nod-off.

Same here. Such a weird level of social “power” given to them without actual reason. At least the old capitalist families actually had functionally important capital control with oil, land, industrial production. The Kardashian/Jenner families are just famous and rich for being famous and rich. And they (and many others like them) have inspired so many people to aspire to get famous and rich via clout chasing instead of anything else. Becoming a plague of thinking they are smart about stuff just because of their follower count.

Yeah the massive amounts of land that have no towns or even houses in the western half of the USA throws the density curve pretty dramatically. Makes it seem like the USA isn’t the surveillance state it really is, while making other smaller (land wise) surveillance states seem worse. With the density looking less problematic, it really lets the frog that is the American populace not notice the water getting closer to boiling.
