politics @lemmy.world•“Demonic Stuff”: Kansas GOP Accuses Democrat of Being a WitchEnglish
9·1 day agoI know the reference but just fyi, this was not nearly as common as claimed and not responsible for a lot of witch trial stuff. It was more like cops interrogating people until they freak out, then claim “fine I wrote my name in the devil’s book, but Becky did too!!” And then it ended up some prosecutorial bullshit with them wanting a confession out of everyone.
The “funny” thing is, those that confessed and repented often survived and lived normal lives. It’s more people that denied it and had others claim they were witches were executed.
And there are weird instances like a guy who confessed but was still executed… But he legitimately was giving divinations, and telling people how many children they would have. Like a back in the day psychic. The witch trial stuff really, really didn’t like divination. Herbs and midwifery stuff was way less of a big deal, and an honored profession being a “physic”. It was not considered witchcraft to use herbs to heal people unless you did weird rituals.
For grain to give you hallucinations, it has to be rye grain and in a cold and wet climate, which ergot specifically would grow in. Then the rye grain itself would grow big black visible horns, and they would still need to not discard that obvious contaminated grain and grind it into flour. Then that flour was eaten, and they hallucinated. And it fucked up your veins and gave you black limbs often too.
There’s often not great evidence for this phenomenon unless they are in a cold and damp area growing rye, and report the medical issues on top, black limbs.
People act like if you let bread mold it’ll grow it, but that’s not the case. It’s much more rare of a phenomenon, a fungus that attacks rye itself.
oh yeah I figured the same.
You know looking into it now out of curiosity, it sounds like there’s auto dialer laws and they can send SMS without express consent as long as a human initiated the text. So they send messages by hand I guess, then probably have machines handle the STOP stuff
Nah some actually do and I was fucking shocked when the dude laughed at my joke, can’t even remember what it was
I just remember being slightly embarrassed but he said I made his day

They don’t have to be an Elon Musk fan boy to be like “huh going to Mars would be cool, I don’t know”, but that’s the thing, you just introduced a way to come to a quick conclusion where you don’t respect the person enough to fuck them. It’s over before it starts.
If they start rattling off about Elon Musk out of nowhere, I get it, but that’s also part of it - they’d do that shit if you tried casual sex and it’d kill the mood. But if you try to talk a ton instead of jumping to casual sex, you invite this sort of incident. You ask them to talk about shit they’re interested in, and some of it may disappoint you greatly.
By having this small talk ahead of time and trying to make a connection, you stopped trying to have casual sex and started trying to connect with someone, and you’re likely not going to be each other’s soul mate here when you’re both just being horny… So why bother fucking with that type of conversation?
I’ve had casual sex where most of what I remember was the shitty small talk after that I should have avoided. It’s way better to be like “yeah baby that was great uh huh bye” and run out the fucking door after.
There’s another unfortunate scenario where they end up liking you and wanting more and you don’t and you started it out with honestly being horny, so don’t give them a reason to fall for you and ruin a good casual thing too.
it’s better to just get it out of the way rather than have long tormented pretend social activity when two people are literally just horny
…and if there was someone you thought was hot and you wanted to fuck them, do you want to fuck it up by having a weird disagreement about whether it’s worthwhile for SpaceX to go to Mars or some shit?
Or the world is so fucked up and they’re contributing so much, they don’t give a fuck about the cancer

They used to get physical abuse too but now they just have to settle for light emotional
You know what pisses me off? All that censorship of d*ath and r*pe and “unalived himself” isn’t to make it safer for people like to remove trigger words or something, it’s that the YouTube algorithm would realize their content is adult content otherwise and make it so they can’t show it to kids.
These fucking asshole influencers wanted to get as much money as possible, and wanted to talk about really sensitive topics and ensure they got ad money from all age groups.
So this whole thing started as a predatory trick

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Is it ethical to pirate a game to try it, and buy a license later?English
2·4 days agoI’d say ethics aside, it’s inherently dangerous to pirate executable files… so there’s an argument to just not do it to avoid viruses.
I personally would never pirate an executable file for that reason alone. A lot of games have demos these days thankfully, so that’s a way to get a taste and see if it’s worth buying. And in my experience, I got bored of several demos and saved money! And some I realized I would probably really enjoy it.
Ethically though? I mean, if they offer a demo and they’re an indie studio, I think it’s much more ethical to try the demo.
No joke, in darkness that would be terrifying

192·4 days ago…just make your own at that point and save money? You should not be suffering spending extra on unscented stuff. That’s like the easy ass default. You can buy unscented soap in bulk for cheap as hell.
And haven’t tried this, but: https://cadryskitchen.com/diy-coconut-oil-deodorant/
Like baking soda, cornstarch, and coconut oil might be all you need for an unscented deodorant
Pretty interesting and if anything out of it is real, then it’s a significant breakthrough in machine learning. It means we have computer automation to automate research itself, which hopefully should amplify technological progress and not just replace workers, but it’s concerning that we have to consider that impact in the first place.
Someone else said it’s like a “million monkeys hitting a million typewriters”. That’s incredibly dismissive, but I think there’s also a sliver of truth to it.
The randomness and hallucination/error rate is a spectrum here. It’s not 100% random like a million monkeys hitting a million keyboards, but there’s still some hallucinations that lead to big mistakes.
You see the same thing in computer security. There’s a ton of “slop vuln reports”, but now and then, one is real. The fact that generative AI can generate a real one now and then means that it’s actually doing something interesting and powerful, yet that doesn’t mean we’ll necessarily see it hit 100% ever. I think we have to accept that it generates slop by design and someone needs to sift through slop in all various forms.
I think the AI oligarchs are realizing, and the rest of us are slowly seeing, is that you don’t get exponential improvement by adding more datacenters. Maybe sigmoid or logarithmic. And we might not be able to get enough training data to make the AGI everyone dreamed of.
But there might be this middle ground where humans still actually train and work in these fields and use AI to help automate some aspects like today and sift through some slop when applicable and we greatly accelerate technological progress. This middle ground is not what they promised investors, and they’re going to cause a financial crisis when investors realize it’s slowing down to a halt, and they still have to pay employees.
There absolutely is a real and useful and even groundbreaking technology here, but that conversation is muted by the way CEOs have pushed it on people like it’s the next industrial age, trying to replace and automate whoever possible, and oligarchs have used fear mongering to basically scam the entire fucking country at once and take a trillion in funds to build AI data centers and use exponential amounts of energy just because it can code a little bit better if you throw another 100 billion at it.
I use it and appreciate some of what it can do, and it’s not perfect but it is still very useful. But for fucks sake they could have handled this a little better than dumping so much into they trigger the next economic crisis.
I always see cat food with labels like “sweet potato” and “fish and rice”.
Motherfucker since when did cats hunt sweet potatoes or rice???
They add a shit ton of filler they probably shouldn’t be having.
Also it is pretty new for cats to be “indoor only”, isn’t it? That probably has a lot to do with their weight issues. People used to just let them go buck wild but now it’s a known ecosystem issue and also dangerous with cars.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Will my mango lassi give me heavy metal poisoning or some other chemical build up from seemingly dissolved liner?English
31·6 days agoIf it’s an issue like this, I wouldn’t go by smell. You probably don’t know what chemical or metal got into the food from a smell.
Humans are generally good at detecting mold/bacteria smells, generally. This is not that.
It looks like a food grade can lacquer to preserve the tin, and it failed. Wouldn’t eat the mangoes, and I’d tell the company. It’s probably not the end of the world if you ate some but I wouldn’t eat the rest.
Don’t mess with dented cans and such. Even botulism, the really dangerous bacteria, won’t often be smelled.
