Hi everyone! You might recognize my name in here by now, but now you’ll see a tiny little ‘m’ next to it!

Dremor (head mod here in c/Games) recently asked me if I could step into moderating here, and I have accepted.

I’ve done a lot of moderating on Reddit, from super-large places with 10s of millions subscribed to it (in the fields of tech and programming, gaming and so on), to extra small ones (the last I grew from nothing to 35K when I left the site), so I do know how to not only moderate, but to foster a community and help it feel fun. Though, to be totally fair…it’s been a good while since I left Reddit - I’ll be rusty!

And what I haven’t done is moderate her on Lemmy, so I hope you’ll give me a little time to not only learn the ropes…but find them first.

I’m lucky in that a lot of my good friends are developers of games, projects, programs, operating systems and apps to do with gaming (and so on), so maybe in time I’ll be able to convince some to do some things here in this community (giveaways, AMAs, chats, something-like-that), but we’ll see!

If you’ve got anything you’d like to see in c/Games, then by all means leave a comment so we can see what we can do.

That’s all, I think!

To me if it’s a new release of a game…of course it should be shared! The first person to post it (preferably with their own views on the game coming written underneath) keeps the community up-to-date with what games look like. Trailer ‘dumping’ really only happens when there’s a big event, and the point of that event is seeing trailers for games. It makes sense to have them shared here.

But posts sharing the same trailer after that first? Removed.

I don’t think of it as ad spam, because it’s not like Rockstar is making a Lemmy account to make sure we see the GTA VI trailer. If we denied trailers being posted, there’d be some very angry Silksong people when that one got the trailer!

Should they be consolidated into one post then? It’s just bothersome to see a bunch of ads (because let’s be real, trailers are ad material) dumped in quick succession. The only ones I’d watch are for games I’m interested in playing, but for the ones I really want to play, I’d rather go in mostly blind so I won’t watch those either.

It’s not just one trailer, either, it’s announcement, release date, “now on steam”, cinematic trailer, gameplay trailer, release announcement trailer.

That’s indeed what we asked to do next time for big events. Bit when no such big event occurs, it’s OK.

In my opinion, the following trailers are acceptable :

          • Announcement of a new game -> so we can start talking about that game
          • Announcement of end of early access or of game release (like Hades 2 recently) -> So we can talk about the game at its release state
          • Major update of updates of a game (as soon as it isn’t too often) -> So we can discuss how that specific update make that game evolve, for better or worse. I’d honestly still prefer those one to be kept to their dedicated communities, but one from time to time won’t kill anyone.

Globally, that’s also a way to advertise dedicated communities for that specific game, so I think that’s alright.

We’ll discuss all of this with the incoming community rules update.
