Russia didn’t use Mercator in textbooks even in Soviet times. As well many other countries I suspect (IDK about USA), it doesn’t require a great mind to see how flawed is it.
While it’s been a few decades since I was young enough to be in school and I only taught math in a school during covid, the maps that were used were Robinson hanging on the wall. The only time I remember Mercator maps were in text books. Probably because the fit the format better for showing things like trade routes.
