90% light tech entertainment, 10% educational. Youtube tech review channels have limited usefulness outside those few moments you need to make a new purchase but sometimes you might discover or learn something new, but it’s mostly just constant roll of advertisements of new tech gadgets, basic tech advice for the uneducated masses, benchmarks and other such things that don’t really matter much and to be honest, most of the content comes out looking and sounding the same - and rather corporate.

But I guess that’s what happens to all big media outlets eventually.

The WAN show (current tech-afftairs podcast) is the only “half-serious” thing that’s worth a listen imho.

Of course he would say that. But are there any actual productivity gains in the first place or is he just cosplaying. Most of the data right now seems to indicate the perceived velocity gains in lines written/PRs submitted are actually just unnecessary code churn. The time gained from coding is spent in reviewing instead.

My comment is mostly a reflection of people who are not project maintainers. FOSS users are known to be insufferable bunch. We tend to want to crucify people who are trying something different (just see the comments in this thread, for example). The ”community” is toxic, as the kids say.

Sounds like you’re not enjoying your work too much, so applying elsewhere, even if it’s just to test the market is not a bad idea. Should always be doing this anyway, every couple of years to know where you are compared to rest of your peers.

You naturally do not say or mention this to your current colleagues. You leave your notice only after you’ve signed the new contract. You should always leave gracefully, without burning your bridges (no matter how tempting that might be), because you never know. Might need to use them for reference one day.

The ”quality” of current gen LLMs limits their usage to secondary tasks like pure code generation, documentation or testing. It’s impactful but nowhere near the point where you start replacing your engineers with it.

Harness it for very specific tasks and maybe you can gain productivity increases but for anything else its going to cost a lot and still need constant handholding
