One big thing you need to think about is accessibility. This is something that came up in a conversation with a local representative in the UK - for children in public schools it is a requirements that any technology have good accessibility and not leave anyone behind. And accessibility tools on linux are, suffice to say, not great. Especially when compared with those on other closed systems. My local government ended up going with iPads for kids in schools, and the accessibility tooling on these was a factor in that choice.

Technology@lemmy.world•GTA 6 leaks prompt Take-Two to subpoena Microsoft for Windows device IDs of everyone in three Discord servers — daily gameplay leaks shatter cloud of secrecy around the much-hyped gameEnglish
1·2 months agoIndie games are good, but if privacy is a concern be careful of any game developed in a big engine like unity. My firewall pings a warning every time I launch a unity game because they all send analytics data back to unity. If it’s single player and you block all outgoing connections by default, you’re fine though.

22·6 months agoI don’t mind injected podcast ads so much, especially for smaller podcasts that need some financial support. What I tend to do is use a VPN, that way the podcast is in my local language, but the ads are in another that I don’t understand. I get my podcast, podcasters get paid, and I avoid tracking and brainwashing. win-win-win

27·7 months agoThis is one of the points that a French MEP brought up during the meeting. If this is pursued it could as a side effect open up space for digital “orphaned works” which would be fantastic.

Technology@lemmy.world•Spotify says its best developers haven't written a line of code since December, thanks to AIEnglish
6·9 months agoIt may be waiting to enshittify, but as it is still DRM free, that’s not a huge deal breaker (as long as they don’t change this policy). Plus, they’re still doing Bandcamp fridays, so it’s still the best way to financially support a musician at the moment.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Have Nvidia drivers on Linux gotten worse over later generations?
14·11 months agoThe drivers run OK, but because they were not built for my distribution with the right flag, when I sleep and resume my system, I need to log out and back in to the desktop or else it bugs out.
Is this the drivers fault for not having that be a default flag? The maintainers fault for not using the correct flags? Waylands fault for not interfacing with the driver right on resume? My fault for having the audacity to want to use the sleep function?
I have no clue, but it doesn’t happen with the open source nouevau drivers, so I’m inclined to place a fair bit of the blame with nvidia.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Beyond Left and Right. Digital ID is Everyone’s Enemy
1·1 year agoYes, if the government was sane and allowed a physical card as an alternative/backup, but the UK gov wants to make it digital only.
Some important context here is that Switzerland already has a national ID card system, this is an extension allowing people to use a digital version if they prefer.
I’m not saying that isn’t going to be without its privacy concerns, but them narrowly voting that in is a far cry from, oh I don’t know, the UK government forcing an entirely new scheme on people without a referendum.

Technology@lemmy.world•Brave browser blocks Windows feature that takes screenshots of everything you do on your PCEnglish
181·1 year agoMy point was that brave’s solution, like Signal’s, is dependent on microsoft playing fair. If microsoft decides they don’t want brave, signal, or anyone else using DRM to interfere with their screen scraping chatbot, there is not going to be an easy way to fix it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Brave browser blocks Windows feature that takes screenshots of everything you do on your PCEnglish
71·1 year agoThey haven’t blocked the windows feature, they’re using DRM to interfere with it. Microsoft could easily change how the DRM works any time they want, rendering all these hacks useless.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•What type of piracy do you think will become harder to do over time?English
16·1 year agoNetflix’s short stint with FMV / chooe-your-own adventure games highlights a perfect case of difficult preservation - all the runtimes are closed source apps, all the data is streamed from a server, and all the logic is held on the server.
In theory (big caveat) with enough time, effort, and determination you could reverse engineer your way around even the worst Denuvo has to throw. For simple streamed content like images and sound you can always analog-hole your way around preserving content.
But for anything where the key thing you want to preserve, like logic, that depends entirely on a server somewhere existing, that’s a problem.

Technology@lemmy.world•Palantir CEO Alex Karp praises Saudi engineers and takes a swipe at Europe, saying it has 'given up' on AIEnglish
10·1 year agoFor a brief brief moment I was elated when I parsed the title as ‘Palantir says it has given up on AI’. Then I read the article and was left dejected.

I’m glad for the game devs but this article’s reporting is really confusing. 226% increase on what? They haven’t released a game recently before this. Of course you’re going to make money right after you release something new. A better comparison would be against the last quarter that they released a new game.
