It’s even wilder when you take the concept of ridgidity and transfer of energy out of the equation and just think in terms of pure information propagating though a light cone. Rigidity itself is a function of information.

28·1 year agoI tried something like this for my office chair. It was fine as a seat, but it raised my overall position on the chair vs the backrest and i ended up throwing out my back from the resulting offset. So, mind the chair you intend to use it on.

1·1 year agoAs a web dev myself, I know the sheer amount of money that would have to go into monkey patching together all these disparate protocols and ancient APIs, plus the regulatory requirements, and that’s BEFORE worrying about consumer AND vendor adoption. The only reason to get into it is if the service is secondary to chasing a lucrative buyout before you get crushed by some multinational online retail cartel you never knew existed (but always suspected), or Google AEEs you.
Fintech blows.

71·1 year agoIf I’m being honest, the only thing stopping me from shopping at other sites is having to put my personal and payment details in yet another site for it to go stale, or fall out of my memory, or get leaked in the next big hack.
Some sites have “pay with Amazon” (more likely PayPal, but… ugh. I don’t remember why, but I hate it), but I’d love to see some universal adoption of some sort of payment and shipping details lockbox. Like SSO where you can revoke access to subscribers or something.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Staticrypt: Password protect a static HTML page, decrypted in-browser in JS with no dependency. No server logic needed.
14·2 years agoServed as “flat files” - filesystem, object store, what have you. No server logic generating content, just passing around of strings and binary data. Files are the representation are the source of truth. Counter to a web app, where the content response is ephemeral and the “source of truth” is scattered across a writeable DB and recombinated (potentially) on every request.
Interesting question though, I (a web dev) just take the term for granted.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the worst way you ever broke production?
6·2 years agoI feel a repressed memory or two stirring 😐
Heavy lifting is the only thing that’s stuck for the way my brain works. I used a program called 5x5:
- only 5 different lifts to learn, each full body so there’s no fiddly minmaxing
- more or less timeboxed. 5 sets of 5 reps 3 times with about a minute between each rep and set. To improve, you add more weight, not spend more time
- consistent, once you get the routine down, and you know roughly how long it’ll take, you can just let your body take over, coast on muscle memory and motor neurons, zone back in in an hour when you’re done
- numeric satisfaction as your weights increase in fixed increments.
- immediate gratification because functional strength is neat and comes on surprisingly fast
Downside: So hungry, all the time.
It’s been a few years since I’ve been active. I used to live in an apartment directly above a gym. Now I live in the boonies and need to convert my carport into a garage before I can buy a weight set.

11·2 years agoI’ve seen some active instances die due to admin neglect (not paying the bills, for instance), and I’ve wondered how those communities have fared since, since they’d have to start over elsewhere, and without all the content and history from their origin server. Same goes with user accounts too.

3·2 years agoJust read a thing about how persistent usernames may work better than actual ID. Of course, I don’t have a link, and I’m not finding anything on Google right now, but as someone who uses the same handle across multiple services, which makes my activity traceable, but not necessarily to my real identity, I definitely think there’s something to that.
