ehh, for mandy she’s old and has health issues 😔 she’s nauseous a lot and when she’s nauseous her pica acts up (btw - her pica ONLY acts up when she’s nauseous. if she’s not nauseous she won’t randomly eat things) and she refuses to eat her food and instead will try to eat literally everything else for hours. she’s about 13 but she’s had this issue since i adopted her about 11 years ago (she was a stray so they didn’t have a medical history on her). she’s been on countless different foods and supplements over the years.

last year a vet was FINALLY willing to prescribe something for her after SHE listed everything we tried and i listed more. so mandy’s on omeprazole now… it only helps a little bit but it’s better than nothing. we tried cerenia and it makes her super depressed and tired even at less than the recommended dose.

eating helps her nausea (hence the pica ig? plus the omeprazole working; nausea from acid reflux? yes i’ve tried cat grass too; she’ll eat it once and then wont for months) but she’s extremely picky. i will have six different foods out and she’ll find tape somewhere or a piece of carpet or anything. she SCREAMS at the top of her lungs for hours on end if i put her in a cage (and it makes her pica/nausea worse because of stress ig?). i live in an apartment building and you can hear her all the way down the hall. i do my best to keep her distracted too with playing + she likes to watch tv lol

so at this point… she just gets whatever she’ll eat. she’s only gotten fat this year. she doesn’t look fat to me most of the time, just fluffier/primordial pouch + funny angles but a lot of people keep pointing it out so i think im wrong.

if anyone knows any effective meds for cat nausea besides cerenia and omeprazole lmk. i read most cats get pepcid and my vet “never heard of cats taking pepcid for nausea” and i think pepcid is supposed to be weaker than omeprazole anyway so idk. we’ve tried everything - elimination diets, chicken free, gluten free, grain free, soy free, probiotics, digestive enzymes, the mineral oil laxative things for cats… well one thing we still haven’t tried is the hydrolyzed protein but the vet didn’t want to prescribe it and honestly if she doesn’t like or want it then she will not eat it, even if there’s nothing else.

i do want to add that in spite of this she is the happiest girl. always social and affectionate and talkative and purring and tail up and playful. vets have also said her labs show her as healthy too.

and on the topic of food quality… yeah because of everything like i said at this point she gets what she wants, but for most of her life her diet was expensive top tier food with few fillers. the standard stuff seems to be garbo. they dye a lot of that food… when i had to give her meow mix once in an emergency she threw up and it stained my carpet. like. mandy doesn’t gaf if her food is fancy colors. why are we dying CAT FOOD 😭😭😭

  • maybe you could join and contribute non-slop

edit: not checking the replies for my sanity but i see the downvotes and like. you know content doesn’t just magically appear. right. like real actual human beings have to make an account and upload content for there to be human content. that’s how social media works. making a platform does not automatically mean it comes with content. shocking, i know.

just from skimming i saw maybe two usernames. would be cool if they didn’t post slop but if they did reposts y’all would probably complain about that too (although i saw what could’ve been reposts maybe) and if they posted original content that wasn’t interesting enough you’d probably also complain

if you know how to code then idk. contribute to something like peertube or make your own thing.

or you could just keep funding the slop corporation spying on you and sending your money to child-bombing pedos and your watch history to palantir. it’s fine we all have our preferences. i just assumed people on the fediverse might have values more aligned with not that.

i know it sucks to hear, but if you want things to change you actually have to put the effort in. womp womp

don’t let perfection be the enemy of progress. unless you intend to make a perfect platform with the most engaging original free content. you can do it. i believe

  • Hashimoto’s supposedly doesn’t cause rashes, although apparently a lot of us have skin issues. Supposedly I just have rashes from the eczema 🥲

Hashimoto’s attacks your thyroid, which is super important for keeping you alive. It kills your thyroid over time and significantly increases your risk of developing thyroid cancer. The current “treatment” is hormone replacement as the thyroid dies :) And some doctors recommend going gluten-free (something about the protein of the thyroid gland resembling gluten + increased risk of developing Celiac iirc?)

Some people with Hashimoto’s have no symptoms once they’re on hormone replacement. Others may still have symptoms like GI issues, mood swings, weight gain, increased blood glucose, fatigue, joint pain, feeling cold a lot, menstrual issues, headaches, just to name a few off the top of my head (but there any many)

No one ever told me this part (I was diagnosed over a decade ago), but we also actually have higher nutritional needs. The body is CONSTANTLY using resources attacking itself, the same resources it would normally use for something like an infection. So we’re more prone to nutritional deficiencies, like iron, B-vitamins, and vitamin D.

There have been “rare” instances where the antibodies have started attacking the brain (I use quotes because Ha Ha It’s Hard To Get Doctors To Investigate Anything, could be affecting more people than we know!)

Depending on how much hormone your thyroid can still produce, you might be able to go some time without your thyroid meds. First few years of my diagnosis I technically didn’t “need” meds, but I took them occasionally because research showed that starting them before needed can slow the progression of the disease. Now I can maybe miss a day and not really notice… more than that and I start noticing it. I’m still on a low dose, so I imagine my body is still making enough hormone that I could probably live a few months without it while feeling very shitty and doing damage to my organs.

If your thyroid isn’t producing enough hormones and you aren’t on treatment, you will eventually decline and go into a coma. You can still be treated at this point… but without treatment, bye 😭

  • Just going to jump in immediately with my thoughts as a disabled person with an ESA, since I often see a lot of anti-ESA sentiment from people I would expect to be allys.

If you understand the actual law - no one “abuses” the ESA policy. There has never been an ESA registration. It has been a note from an actual medical professional that you see for treatment stating that the animal is medically necessary, and this only applied to housing.

Anyone who accepted “ESA registrations” didn’t understand the law, anyone who said ESAs could be in public places did not follow the law.

You should not be okay with punishing disabled people because other people aren’t following the law.

Maybe fine people who break the law and put that money towards programs that improve the lives of disabled people.

    Anecdotally, it can be contagious.

I live in one of those most dangerous towns in my country. We have a Facebook group where people will proudly act really nasty toward each other.

One time someone was mean to me and it was unwarranted. I think anyone wouldn’t’ve blamed me if I called her out.

I can be nasty myself. A lot. ESPECIALLY if I’m being attacked. But I’m trying to work on it.

For whatever reason, in this situation I happened to remember that I’m trying to work on it. And as badly as I wanted to be the bigger bitch, I chose to be the bigger person and I chose to respond with kindness. And I felt like shit. And I felt mad that I wasn’t “defending” myself.

It caused a chain reaction that I’ve never seen in this town. People were hopping into the replies also offering kindness to this person.

This was awhile ago and I still feel great about it. Which is another benefit.

You’re way more likely to regret being mean than you are to regret being kind.
