Technology@lemmy.world•Data Centers Are a $6 Trillion Time Bomb, Analysts Warn: "What the industry needs is a wave of innovation that will dwarf what mobile and cloud unlocked."English
4·5 days agoJesus… I totally misread the article. I thought it was 6 trillion total, not 6 trillion yearly revenue. That’s so, so much worse.

Technology@lemmy.world•Data Centers Are a $6 Trillion Time Bomb, Analysts Warn: "What the industry needs is a wave of innovation that will dwarf what mobile and cloud unlocked."English
2·5 days agoWe’re up to 8.3 billion people now, fam.
6 trillion / 8.3 billion = ~750
And that number has to be spread over 5 years since the target date to raise the 6 trillion is 2031.
750 / 5 = 150
But, like I said, that’s still just a conservative estimate that doesn’t account for the fact that the AI firms have astronomical operating costs to cover.

Technology@lemmy.world•Data Centers Are a $6 Trillion Time Bomb, Analysts Warn: "What the industry needs is a wave of innovation that will dwarf what mobile and cloud unlocked."English
5·6 days agoIn order to make $6 trillion by 2031, every human being on earth would have to spend at least $150 per year on average.
Maybe that doesn’t sound like a lot if you’re already paying a $100 a month for a Claude max subscription or whatever, but consider that the vast majority of people don’t pay for any AI at all, and have no interest in ever paying for it.
Also, $150 is a best-case scenario where revenue is 100% profit. In actual reality, the profit margins are much, much lower, and may not even exist at all!
What we like to call a “target-rich environment”

121·10 days agoGiven that the role of the modern senator is basically just to accept donations from monied interest groups and then do exactly as they say, one could argue that Fetterman is an extremely good senator.

It’s a fucking blog post. Not everything needs to have animated UI and fancy scrolling and interactive elements. Just let me read, Jesus Christ…

1·12 days ago“chose not to” glosses over a LOT of nuance. Saying that 1/3 of Americans just choose not to vote may be technically true, but it’s basically the same thing as saying certain ethnic groups commit more crime while completely ignoring the historical, political, economic and cultural forces that created that situation.

14·15 days agoThe last thing I wanna see is Call of Duty: Spartan Ops or whatever the fuck, but let’s not pretend that 343/Halo Studios are any better. Their stewardship of the Halo franchise has been an unmitigated disaster from the start.
“We’re sorry and we’re listening” has basically been Bungie’s motto for the entire post-Halo era.
Not saying they can’t pull off a comeback, but Jesus Christ… this is like the sixth or seventh time they’ve had to make an announcement like this. Somebody break the fucking cycle already…
ETA: I’ll be curious to see if they shoot themselves in the dick again by charging players to regain access to the vaulted content.

7·19 days agoI use AI every day to do the typing for me, but not the thinking.
It’s probably going to take a few years, but eventually I think devs will finally realize that the typing is the thinking.
There are projects I worked on 5+ years ago that I can still describe in intimate detail. I remember the design decisions, I remember the concessions I had to make for technical or business reasons, I remember they connect to other systems, etc. Then by contrast I have code I wrote with Claude ~2 months ago and I can barely remember a single fucking thing about it… I did all the same planning and made all the same kinds of decisions, the only difference is that I didn’t write the actual code.
And that makes sense. When you physically engage with the code by manually typing, you’re creating connections in your brain that you don’t get just from reviewing it. It’s exactly the same reinforcement mechanism you get from taking physical notes during a lecture versus just passively listening. Physical engagement builds memory and sharpens understanding.
Two or three years from now, when all of the projects minted in the '23-'26 era have aged into ‘legacy’ status and the AI-generated technical debt has been left to proliferate unchecked, things are going to start breaking in ways that the LLMs won’t be able to reason their way out of. Maybe they’ll be able to ‘fix’ bugs as they pop up, but in slopified code fixing something in component A is inevitably going to break something in component B, and fixing something in component B will break component C, etc. Eventually you’ll end up with a disgusting, agentic ouroboros of regressions, and the only devs left in the industry will be wishing they hadn’t mortgaged all of their intelligence on short-term productivity gains — most of which only benefited the shitty tech companies that were so desperate to replace them.
