1984 and Brave New World are allegories based on real life social observations and events. So, yes, they are based on history. They are famous for a reason. It is just that you find it too close to comfort.

When comparing something to one of these books, we’re testing their observations by comparing them to reality. Incidentally, it gets brought up a lot when an event, occurrence, or vector in society begins to resemble these books too closely.
