Hi!

First, I’d like to apologize for asking the age-old question yet again.

I’m running Bazzite right now with a 50-series nvidia, and have no real complaints. I did manage to bork up coolercontrol pretty nicely, though, and am going to use it as an excuse to try another distro (and update my m.2 while I’m at it).

My knowledge level is not terrible, but I prefer spending more time gaming than tweaking.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Honestly, switching to amd is a better solution than trying to shoehorn a device into an ecosystem who’s creators aren’t aligned with it. Nvidia and their GPUs continue to be this giant sore spot for Linux all because of Nvidia’s choices. Continuing to contribute to their monopoly and anti consumer practices won’t be changing anything either, but folks eat up the hype for their over priced crap because tech YouTubers tell you to.

Been gaming on EndeavourOS since about 2 years. Tried Bazzite and CachyOS lately but came back to EndeavourOS.

Personally I chose Pop for the same reason, I don’t want to sit there tinkering for hours. They have a version with nvidia drivers already baked in, everything worked out of the box. Installed Steam from the popshop (which does flatpaks) and took off from there.

Its how I installed pop on my desktop. Not my favorite distro, but it works out of the box with my hardware.

I tried to install some other flavors, the screen was color challenged. After some research I found I would have to adjust a text file. I was not doing that. I was impatient that day, and wanted it to just work.

There’s ujust commands for cooler control.

    Fan control?

I just use my UEFI custom setttings myself.

There’s also fan-control Flapak to name one flatpak.

Distro hoping is a fine way to something something something.

Mint. You can install the drivers for Nvidia by opening the start menu, typing “driver” clicking on the tool and then using the graphical tool to install the Nvidia driver (just use the recommended version or the latest). After a reboot you’re all set. Just install Steam and HeroicGamesLauncher and you’re gaming.

    CachyOS!

    • Arch Nvidia drivers are always new, but not too new.

    • Nvidia support is from upstream arch, so no middleman screwing that up. Though it conveniently includes precompiled kernel modules for all the custom kernels so you don’t need to mess with dkms.

    • Easy scheduler switching! I highly recommend scx_cosmos

    • Natively compiled packages for Zen4+, and mostly native AVX for other CPUs.

    • Git proton right in the packages, no need to break shit going out to the AUR or messing with system packages.

And that’s just what I know. Every time I dig into some preconfigured thing, I’m pleasantly surprised it’s that way and I don’t have to mess with it, while at the same time it doesn’t diverge from Arch for the sake of it and break stuff like Manjaro.

I switched at least 3 years ago (can’t even remember now), and haven’t switched since. I haven’t even wiped the paritition, it just keeps working with little fuss…

I made the switch recently. I tried Pop and Bazzite, but neither worked out of the box for me. I switched to Nobara, and then found out I was using Gamemode incorrectly, so I don’t know if that was causing my problems, or if Nobara does something differently.

Since then, Protondb has had all the tinkering tips I’ve needed, which is generally just copy and paste.

is it important it be immutable or a gaming distro? I mean I like zorin especially after adding kde and it asks if you want to use the nvidia drivers but it is totally not a gaming distro and is more about stable and out of the box which also kinda makes it old as in conservatively old or not at all bleeding edge.

It doesn’t have to be immutable - if it breaks I’ll just start over. Its a gaming rig, no productivity.

It doesn’t have to be a gaming distro, but it will be used (almost) exclusively for gaming.

What I like/liked about bazzite is it recognized my GPU (and everything else) and I could hit the floor running.

zorin should recognize the gpu and ask if you want to use the proprietary nvidia driver. If you install proton afterwards it should work out for gaming but I don’t use it for that and as I said its more about stability and out of the box than bleeding edge or best performance. I can’t really say how it will be for gaming. Funny thing is my intention going forward is to paly around with bazzite and appimage as a way forward. mostly because I like the immutable thing.
