Hi guys,

There is an “issue” that I’m experiencing lately, and I don’t know why exactly.

Sometimes a user has a question that I would like to answer for them, so I click reply, but then the instance that user is on asks me to create an account. So it’s basically asking me to create another account for that specific instance even though I’m using a Lemmy account to write this post.

My question: Why is this happening, and shouldn’t we be able to react to one another?

Im using:

  • Lemmings.world via web for my pc/laptop (I use Mint by the way :P)
  • Voyager an client which can be found on fdroid for Android.
  • Default UI

When replying make sure you’re still on your own instance. So lemmings.world should be in the address bar. If you are on another instance you should be able to get to the same post by searching for the URL on your own instance.

I put lemmyverse.link at the start of URLs that lead to a different instance. That redirects them to my home instance where I xan vote, comment etc.

I can’t say I’ve ever had that happen to me, so I don’t know what to tell you. But you’ll probably want to add some information to your post, such as:

    • Are you on a PC or mobile device
    • What browser or app you’re using for Lemmy
    • Are you using the default UI or an alternate like Photon or Alexandrite (I don’t know if any of the apps give you a choice or if this is only applicable in a browser)
    • Screenshots showing the steps to reproduce the issue

And also what instance the original post is on that you would like to comment to. Could this maybe be some kind of one-sided federation issue? Where posts get federated to your home instance, but replies grom your home instance are not being accepted by OP’s instance?

Oh, I did not realize that it worked this way. I always figured the reply object would have to first be created on the post’s original server (simply listing the reply creator as being from a foreign server) and then federated outwards from the post’s original sever again. I did not realize that replies could be directly created on foreign servers, as from the viewpoint of the original post server.
