I kind of hate to have to say this, but its ok to still like the stories. If you have to buy them, buy used, otherwise pirate. I can’t possibly be the only one who was launched headfirst into allyship by the HP fandom and the more people that happens to the better. As always, JK can go fuck herself.

It’s not just about enjoying the stories though. It’s more about buying more and more merch, running promo with your house scarf and that stuff. It’s about.claiming to be an ally while still giving her money that she proudly funnels into hate campaigns.

In my opinion, even talking about the licence itself is giving her free publicity and indirect money. HP should be forgotten until she dies.

And that’s why you buy used or pirate😁 No additional money for the shithead and the market is flooded with second hand stuff anyways

Honestly, even if the whole franchise didn’t leave a bitter taste in my mouth, I wouldn’t want ti buy used merch and run around promoting it.

I generally am not a huge fan of licensed merch, I prefer fan- or selfmade stuff, but to me there is still a difference between printing a Rohan coat of arms on a t-shirt and knitting a Gryffindor scarf.

I never bought any merch, so I was mainly talking about books and movies, full agree on Rohan tho!

Buying used still takes away supply that is filled up with new purchases that profit JKR, resulting her using your money kill trans people.

Piracy still increases sales because the IP stays in the zeitgeist. At a personal level, this means that if you talk with others about having enjoyed pirated HP IP, you are stochastically advertising for JKR, resulting in you giving JKR that person’s money that she then uses to kill trans people.

“No ethical consumption under capitalism” still applies, though. It’s often impossible to avoid contributing to murder. As long as you are trying to undermine capitalism, it is okay to keep yourself happy using whatever means available to you that you can stomach.

            Related tangent!

I’ve had a debate about listening to music produced by the worst people. Conditions included no downloads from any site that would be able to track your download and iterate a counter. Have to play where no one can hear it. Can never discuss it or let anyone see you listen to it.

None of that mattered because the person still felt icky but it is tough for me to see it as a moral issue at that point. (assuming you already legally owned the thing)

Yeah… The comment you’re responding to literally says you can like the stories just don’t give JK your money. Not sure what you’re adding here

Publically wearing merch is promoting the franchise which makes others wanting to buy merch and giving her money is what I’m adding here.

I’m conflicted when her movies enter the libraries of streaming services. I’m not sure how exactly they get monetized and how much of a difference one watch makes. I watched Fantastic Beasts. Newt Scamander is a cute character. But I watched it with my parents, who would’ve watched it anyways.

I own Hagwarts Legacy, I got it somewhere for free. They probably get some compensation for freebies, but I wouldn’t expect that to be determined by the exact amount of gifted titles either. I never played it.

Nobody should be using any of the big streaming services anyways just because they’re evil in their own right. Just pirate HP stuff if you want to watch it.

Epic gave money to JK Rowling (through the game licensing) for each copy of the game redeemed. So you did give her money.

Even if it’s a lump sum, it’s most probably based on how many copies they expect to give away. I think the game was free twice, and I’m sure the publisher knows some gamers won’t pay for it for ethical reasons, so it’s a way for gamers to wash their hands clean saying they did not pay even though money still exchanges hands.
