The Ontario Premiere yanked cameras out of Toronto and speeding, crashes, pedestrian deaths all went up 2.5x.

With all the tech in cars, why do we allow unrestricted speeds?

      Correlation doesn’t imply causation.

Lots of traffic offense rates went up over the last few years because there were years where nobody was driving during COVID just prior. It’s real easy to make statistic look scary in situations like this where something going from a rate of 1 to a rate of 11 can be listed as “XYZ went up 1000% in one year alone!!!” even if that higher number is miniscule in context (like 11 speeding tickets handed out amongst 10,000 drivers on the road).

It can also mean higher enforcement rates to recoup the lost revenue. Sure, they’re handing out 2.5x as many speeding tickets because they’re currently prioritizing speeding tickets. A full snapshot might indicate that clearance rates for robbery and rape have dropped in half because more officers are on traffic duty because that brings in cash while solving crime does not. Here you can claim “2.5x as many speeding” tickets despite absolutely nothing changing with the way people are driving before or after that 2.5x figure.

True, cars should have speed limiters built in at the manufacturer. No car needs to go over 100-120km/h depending on the highway. In the city 50-80km/h should be the max.
