Hey, I’ve got unpopular opinions. No, it’s usually someone who is trolling.

It’s far from perfect but of the people I’ve seen, they are usually so bad that they are damaging dialogue, not fostering it.

Usually it’s eventually reversed if they are not a troll. People here are pretty decent and upvote most things.

I started out with an old laptop then eventually “upgraded” to a refurbished office surplus desktop. I highly recommend starting out on a project PC as a sort of proof of concept before investing any money into it. Even hosting the family media libraries, I have never had an issue with streaming video, etc. even with pretty dated hardware.

I think it depends on the model, but there should be something in the power settings to change the startup device. I did a factory reset first to clear any network settings or user data, skipped the setup, and set it to startup on the HDMI input.

For years I was a big fan of Roku. It represented a better value alternative from the big corporations pushing their own agenda like Google, Apple, Samsung, and Amazon. They made products that were intuitive and user oriented and carved out a very nice and stable market share for themselves because of it. Now they’re just leveraging their hardware relationships to transform the software into something terrible.

Whether an action is justified or not has nothing to do with whether it is a blockade. We can debate the former, but you’ve already admitted that we agree on the latter. It is, by any rational definition, not a blockade. You’ve said as much. Why are you talking in circles about this? Just move on.

I’m not sure what you are arguing here. Clearly we agree this is not a blockade, and your “evidence” that the terrorism is somehow valid is that one of the boats used to belong to an American company?

Some communities use a “santabot” to auto-ban accounts with more downvotes than upvotes. I’ve never seen it happen to someone who didn’t deserve it.

Good moderation eliminates trolls pretty quickly. Admins are incentivized to respond to users’ concerns rather than a profit motive. Some communities do have a minimum account age for certain actions, and some instances require a real email address and IP address to join/participate.

Trolls are bots are rare on Lemmy. They are the norm on reddit.

Exactly - Reddit specifically and intentionally uses dark patterns to reinforce the importance of karma at every turn. The first interaction that someone has with Reddit is usually “you don’t have enough karma to post/comment/vote in this subreddit.” There are secret communities and public awards for high karma earners. There is a frontpage dedicated to rapid karma-earning posts. There is no disincentive for karma farming reposts, and subreddits are actually punished for reducing reposts. Karma is commoditized.

Here the votes still matter, but the algorithm is public and users can and do sort in a variety of ways to discover new and relevant content. There is no single “front-page”

By international law, a blockade must be enforced by naval ships, and violating vessels must be duly warned before being boarded and redirected. The crew and cargo may be captured or released according to the relevant laws.

Hard to argue that this is really a blockade. Maybe in the broadest sense. It’s a violent rebel group attacking civilians in hopes of punishing political rivals with no other clear objective. That’s basically the definition of terrorism.

For political content, be aware of the instance you are posting in. Lemmy.world is pretty good, but will often remove any posts about political violence, including guillotines and “Luigi” content. Lemmy.ml will remove content that is critical of communism, including Russia and CCP.
