I’m gonna go ahead and say “no”. The upside down thing is a novelty and makes a mess. Not to mention it leaks.
The best bet for a person new to gardening is a large pot with potting mix. Water as appropriate, they like sun.
Bonus tip: plant at least one cherry tomato plant as a snack for when you’re tending the rest.
Tomatoes do well in hydro or aero but it’s a lot more involved.
Other plants that do well indoors are strawberries, basil, chives, parsley, spinach and some other leafy greens or herbs, carrots and radishes. (Carrot tops are great in salad too.)
