When I was a teenager, I made a trebuchet. It was so fun. It was not sophisticated at all – just made of 2x4 with a steel rod as the axle. The axle was about 1 m from the ground, to give you a sense of its size. It wasn’t large, but it could throw things quite far (about 60 m).
