    In most American states you can register under a political party in order to be eligible to participate in their primary. So therefore party affiliation is gathered data - not sure if it’s public (might vary by state) but they have that data.

      And even in states with open primaries they can see which primary elections you tend to vote in, and identify your party affiliation that way.
