I was gonna say, if your other options are poverty / prison, this isn’t actually a bad deal practically speaking. Not gonna get into the ethics of military service other than to say blaming individuals for trying to escape poverty isn’t the answer. When I teach about chronic institutionalization in a psychiatric context, the military is one of the susceptible demographics alongside prison and long term hospitalization.
