Has there been any instances of these retro handheld companies (which are typically from China) shipping with malware on them just waiting to be connected to your local network?

No, but just because it’s not talked about doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

There were these streaming devices people were seeing advertised everywhere on social media, “free streaming box/stick” or whatever, some android based devices usually. Some of them shipped with backdoors.

Be very wary of what you put on your network and these days I’d just treat your home network as zero trust. If you just need it to see the internet, many routers can create a guest network which isn’t able to talk to devices on your main network. One way to add a layer of security is put hardware you don’t control as much on the guest network, like a smart tv or something like what you’re talking about, then just keep your computer and smartphones on your home main network.

Just got a Pocket Nova and put it on my guest network with AP isolation. Upon connecting to WiFi I immediately saw it connect to Facebook, ESPN, and some others I can’t remember at the moment

Yeah I’m aware of all that. The VSee box and some other one were the most well known. My brother actually has a VSee box and refuses to get rid of it… I will put it on my guest network to be safe, like you said, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Was just curious if anything like this had actually been documented.

Never heard of something like this in the retro handheld space, but FWIW most people flash a custom rom as soon as they get one anyway.
