lol it’s because they can’t keep up and are knee deep in debt. Let them all burn
It’s because they are losing the race to open source models and are looking to slow things down before investors come calling for their money back.
They’re losing the race, but they’re also chronic liars and cheats. You know they’ll just keep doing what they’re doing, while insisting every other model needs to be outlawed for breaking laws they aren’t bound by.
Absolutely. They know that AI and datacenters are unpopular. They have planned out their infrastructure and their control over it. Now it’s time to run to the government and ask for laws to protect their infrastructure and build towards monopolization.
This is how capitalism works. “It’s new tech, we need to stop regulations, it’s for everyone, here, have it for free”. Then it is built into the infrastructure, forced dependence on the technology, and fully privatized, prices skyrocket, service gets worse, and the capitalist controlled state enforces the privatized ownership through “regulations” that are written entirely to maintain the current monopoly.
If only they were in a position where they could lead by example.
I suspect that what they mean by “reckless” AI development is unregulated or otherwise uncontrolled development, especially open weight/open source.
Nvidia just bought HuggingFace. I believe this is an embrace/extend/extinguish play. This places a large corporation in control of the most popular platform for community-driven AI development, a corporation that has supported and cooperated with the Trump administration. Now all the government has to do is push through some regulations, and suddenly everyone using HuggingFace has to register with a government ID in order to continue using it. As an independent group HuggingFace might object, refuse to implement the requirement, file a lawsuit, or at least drag their feet, because it would hurt their customer base. But, Nvidia’s primary customer base is the major platforms, not HuggingFace subscribers, and reducing access to tools on HuggingFace will push more traffic back toward the major platforms, so Nvidia will comply without argument and when people complaints they’ll just say “it’s the law, complain to the government”.
So, the “leading experts” (Musk, Altman, etc), who are already in bed with the government in multiple ways, call for regulation, and the government says “OK, here’s some regulation”. And who gets impacted the most by it? Small, open source developers and community projects.
I’m not a fan of the current generation of machine learning tools, the way they’re being used to produce mountains of garbage, or the rest of the market around them, but I do believe that if any good is going to come out of these tools it will be community driven, not owned and operated by a multi-billion dollar corporation. The government is going to try to clamp down on open weight and self-hosted models, under the guise of “safety”, and try to push users into the large AI platforms, where their use can be tracked, controlled, and monetized.
They are scared of chinese open source AI
That, and they need an excuse for the diminishing returns in their latest models, despite huge capital expenditures.
This is just a ploy to take down Anthropic while they keep all the gov contracts
Yeah, they’ll continue full speed ahead, and force others to abide by the rules. They’ll apologize later, it’ll be too late, no repercussions will happen, etc.
Tale as old as time. Sam and Elon just need to die.
Anthropic was the one who made the call they’re backing…
Man. Reading comments on AI articles really hurts
I don’t believe them.
