That was half the joke of the original movie. Biff got super rich off cheating at sports gambling and was rewarded for his sudden financial success with political authority, because the writers of the movie knew that’s how Americans respond to anyone who appears to be financially successful practically overnight.
Biff was a critique of the people who elected Ronald Reagan. People who were saying exactly the same fascist shit as MAGA Trumpies today.

You must have slept through the whole Catholic Sex Abuse moment. The sex-crimes apologists were crawling out of the woodwork. Guys like Ross Douthat made their first nut trying to defend the indefensible. Half of the Peggy Noonan columns were just her whining about anti-Catholic bias every time another child-rape story broke. JD Vance made his Catholic Turn right in the middle of the scandal, seemingly to suck up to the rich Catholic fuckwits gullible enough to believe he was going to protect them.
Before that, you had the string of scandals at the Texas Youth Corrections office. And the Abramoff Scandal, which had an often-undercovered element of child sex trafficking in the Marianas Islands. And, of course, Epstein himself got off with multiple slaps on the wrist across multiple administrations, thanks to his DC (and Mossad) connections. All these people and institutions retained conservative support in the face of a deluge of accusations and a torrent of new victims coming forward.
Biff has a certain amount of sympathy from me. At least in the first one.

I feel like it’d be better to say that the broad cultural attitude and even aesthetics havent changed too much since the 90s. You could throw me in my normal clothes (Read weeb shirt and surplus camo jacket) and there’s a pretty good chance folks would just assume I’m punk or grunge. While culture has shifted the broad attitudes have really only gotten bleaker if more socially progressive, but here’s the thing the culture that existed when my grandmother was 20 and what existed when my mother was 20 is for more different than my mother and I at 20. Throw me back to 1999 and I would only look different in that I’m a paranoid asshole trying to murder his own father.
Note I’m 26, just using 20 as a baseline since it’s pre 9-11 for my mom and 1976 for my grandmother.

Yes. But we did have computers, basic social media, cell phones, and yes, we did have what constituted fast internet wirh DSL or T1 lines. No, it wasn’t “broadband” by today’s standards, but it was fast enough. Cable internet came out for consumers in ‘96.
Point being anyone going back to ‘95 would have little trouble understanding the world, and vice-versa. The big difference would be carrying the internet, CD collection, and movies in your pocket on a phone. I daresay there would be no small number of people who would prefer the ’90s to all the bullshit happening over the last couple decades.
Going from home PCs, early gaming consoles, cable TV, laser-discs, and a whole other shitload of changes technologically and societally between 1985 and 1955 IMO would be a lot more stark.
The lack of smartphones and social media would be a huge change for a 17 year old today going to 1996. That alone would probably give them difficulty in navigating society.

While you’re secifically right, that’s splitting hairs when compared to the wild differences betwen ‘55 and ‘85 - which is NO PCs, NO cellphones, NO internet, etc. and the point of the comparison was the differences between going back to ‘95 or ‘55 from the specified decades. NOT focusing on a single aspect of today vs ‘95 which, by comparison, is minor despite some 17 year olds having mental breakdowns over a cellphone addiction.

I think a big part of that is how the 80s/90s had inherited a lot from the 1950s that never really made it over the 2000s divide.
So what you had in the 1980s was 50s revanchism that dominated mainstream culture while a strain of alt-media was growing in the cracks. And now that old 50s/80s culture has been fully strangled by an outgrowth of 90s/00s culture which has become the cornerstone of modern media and culture.
