The two Alpha Epsilon Pi members were charged with hazing. The fraternity was booted from the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus in 2015, officials said.
Israel does a thing where if you’re jewish they offer for you to come visit Israel, I believe paying for travel and stuff for you, as a way of getting you invested in Israel
They do the same thing with politicians. Thats what the other replies are talking about. I’m not super knowledgeable on this so take what I’m saying with a grain of salt, just trying to make more clear what’s meant by the other replies
I’m pretty sure it’s like a coming of age thing, so yeah I think it might be 🤷🏻♂️ Like I said, just trying to provide context for the answers others are giving, I cannot provide as helpful of an answer as I would like, I really dont know much about this practice
I just thought the other replies didn’t make much sense without providing an explainer of what kind of practice they were actually characterizing
You’re talking about birthright trips, which are organized by Chabad, a super Zionist org but not Israel itself. They’re free 10 day trips they give to college age students. It is not some Jewish “coming of age” thing or whatever weirdness you’re, I assume unintentionally, veering into some gross territory with.
And I mean that does kinda sound like they target young adults who are coming of age? Maybe I’m using the term wrong. Am I understanding correctly that you get old enough and the org offers to fly you to Israel to get you invested in Zionism? Does coming of age mean a different or more specific thing?
Sure, that makes sense, but the Jewish bar and bat mizvah ceremonies are literally cultural coming of age traditions, equivalent to a quincinera or confirmation. Thus the immediate ick reaction when you frame chabadniks doing birthright as “coming of age”.

wtf are you talking about?

It is disgusting that they removed your comments accusing you of being a jew hater when you only talked about Israel
Zionists on Lemmy maybe?
Total bullshit.

For freshman college students?

Thank you for providing more context!

Ah, gotcha, I get why that would read that way, thanks
I think birthright maybe was the term I’d heard before that I was looking for
