I don’t like spending this much time arguing against campism but they just keep talking at me.

No. But, tell us, what part of the post are you struggling most with comprehending? The “antiauthoritarian” part?

I guess I’m no comprehending the “tankie” part. If you’re on the left and don’t vote for Democrats, you’ll smeared with the same brush. It’s a meaningless red scare snarl word used by your enemies, you seem to think it won’t be applied to you too.

Honestly, I was just letting out my frustration with some folks in another comment section who were proudly insisting that I wasn’t a real enough leftist unless I simp for strongmen.

I’ll still march alongside you (and them too).

Does “simping” even matter? Like, really think about it. If I support China (for example) what effect does that really have? Does that help China? Not really. Will that bring “socialism with Chinese characteristics” to the US? Certainly not!

My personal opinion about China has zero impact on anything. So, who cares?

That sounds rather nihilistic. If it doesn’t matter, why bother having an opinion in the first place? You sound trapped in the sports-politics schema, as if politics can only happen in a Bushesque “you are with or against us” manner. I admire what the Chinese regime has achieved in the past few decades, by not only lifting hundred of millions of people out of poverty, but also preparing China, and in a way the world, for a brighter future. However, that doesnt mean I blindly support their management of public discourse, or expansionist tendencies in South China Sea, stealing territories from Vietnam and the Philippines, for example.

I simply recognize that I can’t change anything about China and it isn’t my place to even try. The only reason I have an opinion about China is because I want to try and learn from their successes. China provides a good example of how to subordinate capitalist development to the will of a powerful political party. Markets can be disciplined.

The border disputes in the South China Sea are coming from every country involved, by the way. It isn’t just big bad China bullying smaller countries, all countries involved are violating each others’ territorial waters:

Minister Susi Pudjiastuti revealed in a statement that ANTARA received here on Monday that 26 of the 556 illegal boats were Indonesian-flagged ones, while 321 Vietnamese, 91 Filipino, 87 Malaysian, 24 from Thailand, two of Papua New Guinea, three from China, and one each from Nigeria and Belize.

But you only hear about China because they are the Designated Bad Guy.

No, while the term “tankie” is used diversely, and some probably use it as you described, the essence of the term is simply a supporter of old school authoritarian “communism”. Think Marxist-Lennist ideologies as experienced under and in the post-Stalin soviets. Tankies love to downplay N Korea’s crimes, as if if denouncing both South and North political establishments is impossible.

No, the essence of the term is “bad leftist” - it has outgrown its historical context.

The majority of discussions about “tankies” are about leftists that refuse to vote in an approved manner: anarchists are “tankies” according to social democrats, social democrats are “tankies” according to liberals, etc etc. You use it to mean “leftist that supports Marxist-Leninism” but that just isn’t how its used by the majority of people. For the majority it’s just a snarl word.
