In the last week I have seen solar punk go down and aussie.zone owner talk about stepping away.

I’ve not seen two places down at once that has made it to my feed in the last 3 years.

Is the self hosting aspect of lemmy a detriment to the entire environment? Admins getting burnt out or the costs becoming too high is absolutely an issue.

I know this is kind of rambling but what would happen to Lemmy if the major hosters all went down, and we all spun up our own personal services?

          The Nvidia guy?

          checks Wikipedia

He got his grad degree at Stanford in 2010, and I bet that he probably donated a bunch of money to the university, probably paid for the thing’s construction. My experience is that it’s not uncommon for people who make it big out of tech universities to donate money to their alma mater, and the university often names something after them.

          searches

          https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/technology/tech-news/jensen-huang-and-his-wife-lori-pledged-30-million-to-stanford-in-2010-the-university-opened-an-engineering-centre-housing-more-than-270-faculty-staff-and-students-with-workshops-for-building-prototypes/articleshow/134831471.cms

Jensen Huang and his wife Lori helped fund Stanford’s engineering centre with their $30 million donation. The university dedicated the Jen-Hsun Huang Engineering Center as a shared space for research, education and collaboration across disciplines.

The building houses more than 270 faculty members, staff and students, along with workshops for building prototypes and models.

The centre was established as part of Stanford’s Science and Engineering Quad, providing a shared space for students and researchers working across engineering, science and medicine. Huang, the co-founder and chief executive of Nvidia, received his master’s degree in electrical engineering from Stanford in 1992.

I’d guess that Nvidia itself might also have donated money:

The building features the 300-seat NVIDIA Auditorium and the Frederick Emmons Terman Engineering Library. The library was designed to support collaboration and help students and faculty access both digital and print research materials.
