If your operating expenses for a website outweigh hosting 50:1 while most work is done by volunteers, something is seriously wrong with your books.

Wikipedia will really be fine. It is all the other expenses that raise eyebrows in a major way. This, of course, includes the pay of the executives and high-ranking officials that earn anywhere between $150k to $500k a year, and their salaries keep growing exponentially. At the same time, they spend donated money hiring union-busting firms - presumably, to crush on the latest unionization attempts and keep growing their pay.

Which drags on to today. Military folks are honored, and being a vet is seen as a badge of honor, not of shame. Would young folk see it differently when joining the military makes you a pariah?

But at the same time, I came to support the statement above with my own take. I have zero compassion to military folks, especially US veterans serving abroad (which she is, having served in Iran - read up on what British, Russian and US troops did there, even outside of what happens now). They knew what they subscribe to, and yet they chose to proceed anyway. It is because of people like her that the world has seen so much pain and suffering. I hope they never find peace, and their glorification sickens me to the core.

Also, yes, we want to live in a world where things are not made disposable. The longer we can maintain what we have, the less waste we produce and the less overproduction we need to rely on. It’s sustainability 101.

This. Get some taste of your own medicine. Coming to crush people around the globe, and then expecting to sit quietly on a patio in peace back home - what could be more hypocritical?

But also, the story is most importantly of abuse of power that can and does affect civilians.

At some point, you get to accept the freedom this idea gives to you. And with that, comes not only appreciation of big moments of leisure and joy (like what you described as writing poetry and listening to cicadas), but also little moments of everyday life.

When you get to your job next time, try to stay out of your smartphone and be vigilant.

• People across talk about a BBQ party, or how quickly kids grow up, or plan a new friends meeting

There are millions of such moments happening every day. Keep an eye out of them, and you’ll see the life happens all the time, not only on vacations.

I remember times not too long ago when you could meet CSAM all over the Web. Often times these were ads for Telegram channels with very graphic screenshots.

It’s not necessary about books being sacred. It’s about throwing out things that can serve more people for much longer. This paper still absolutely has a use, contrary to what you say.

Don’t you have a store for second-hand books around? Or a library that would accept book donations? People will gladly make use of your old book stock. They won’t have to overpay, you will help the environment if nothing else, and some book nerd will finally find the specific edition of a specific book you have.

Back when I was in school, me and my classmates were once tasked to help clear the old books from the library. There was a big dump truck under the library windows, and we were tasked to, essentially, throw books out of the window.

You can be damn sure I took some gems with me. Books should not end like this. But also, for a younger me, it was somewhat fun.

For me too sometimes, but this is what it takes to build a community.

I was not offered to participate in trials, but was among the first to vaccinate in the general population. Took my first shot at like the second day the vaccine got available. Thought of it then as a massive victory for humanity. Apparently, stupidity can absolutely overpower the most brilliant of minds.

It is one thing to hold an opinion; it is another to limit which opinions others can see.

Lemmy devs hold a very radical and strong opinion, but they don’t enforce it on anybody else. You can have any instances posting whatever. This fosters a healthy and open discussion and political development.

PieFed dev enforces certain optics by limiting the sources viewable through it, and some of the choices raises eyebrows in a major way. For example, did you know PieFed bans WikiLeaks? No matter the political stance, you’d rather be able to cite that. This open censorship limits political discussion and serves to reinforce Rimu’s political line instead of going for an honest intellectual exchange.

We have plenty of spaces trying to shape people’s opinion. Fediverse is the direct response to this threat among many. Why would we want to turn Threadiverse into this again?

Again, with that said, I tried to give a more neutral outline. Objectively, Lemmy the software is politically neutral, while PieFed is not. If you share the values baked into PieFed, you may end up enjoying this experience. But overall, this is often seen as problematic around these parts.

Technically: less often updated, may have less of the shiny features. Some see it as positive: Lemmy stays out of the user’s way.

Ideologically: devs are far-left, but the project itself is neutral. Wherever you find yourself politically, you’ll find a place.

Overall: Lemmy is a good option if you want to see the “raw” Threadiverse. Less bells and whistles, no content or moderational filters pushed on the user aside from what instance admins and users themselves decide.

PieFed

Technically: fast-paced development, “move fast and break stuff”, highly experimental, but feature-rich.

Ideologically: Liberal/moderate, enforced. All PieFed instances filter out “radical” left- or right-wing content (see no-qanon PieFed list), all user filters come on top of this list instead of replacing it. It also suffers from the backlash on some of the decisions made, such as vote throttling.

Main dev: @Rimu@piefed.social

Overall: PieFed is a shiny and new, fast-paced, but also opinionated and controversial project. Whether it’s going to be a “peace of mind” or “power tripping dev hellscape” software is only for you to experience.

Potential compromise: PyLova

PyLova is a fork of PieFed designed specifically to cut out opinionated pieces while keeping the technology.

However, it’s only currently present on quokk.au, which is itself opinionated (anarchist, far left).
