  • Yeah I tried it, out of the gate my favourite WM - i3 isn’t supported.

I tried some of the other WMs, and they all kinda sucked imo.

I tried Gnome but it didn’t work for me when I tried using guake.

I also had issues with Spectacle on Plasma (captured area is just plain white).

In both - OBS didn’t work properly either (black screen with some capture methods, massive lag with others) and games were a bit laggy (stutters/frame time spikes).

Last one could be that Wayland doesn’t play nice with the proprietary Nvidia driver or that unlike with Xorg, Proton/SteamPlay dont support launching a gamescope nested session from a Wayland session (or didn’t back when I tried it) which usually ensures silky smooth performance.

So yeah, this was a while back but.

  • But we’re not talking about X-Y problems (a concept in IT support and mostly inapplicable in real life) in either OP’s question or my example, nor are those things unethical or begging the question.

The response is still and always to answer it. You’re not IT support talking down to an “ignorant” (in reality they actually just don’t care) user, you’re on equal footing and you should respond.

And lol what efforts? Blocking Imgur? Handing the nation’s IDs to private companies via KYC and now not even being able to browse Reddit without entering an ID to some shady American tech giant? Outsourcing defense to Palantir?

You talk about ethics, here’s a freebie: The ethical thing is to oppose the UK government.

  • Yes. But more specifically I really dislike the redditism where someone asks a question and is met only with someone getting all upset about that question. E.g.;

OP: “Hey how do I do X?”

Comments: “Don’t do X. Why would you do X? I never do X. I am the moral and pragmatic centre of the universe so I know there is no reason to ever do X. You must be stupid to not be like me. No my underlying assumptions about your person don’t need to be evaluated. It is obvious that I am superior”

One time I asked linux_gaming to give me some reasons I shouldn’t game on Kali Linux, which I clarified as already using as my main and daily driver OS because I work in the sec field and most of what I do outside of work is CTFs and various HackTheBox machines and gaming was a small hobby not worth a separate OS install and disk use for me.

Anticipating the response I’d get, I made sure to mention that Kali is just convenient to have all the tooling available in one box, and as I do some hardware stuff I don’t use a VM. I made sure to mention I know it’s just Debian and there shouldn’t be any problems but just in case there’s some issues with steam that breaks something I figured I’d ask.

    The responses?

“Uhh, Kali isn’t for gaming, use bazzite” “You must be new. Visit the FAQ” “No you can’t use it for gaming”

Especially the last, when I inquired as to why the user just kept stating over and over that it’s not what it’s for and it’s why it doesn’t work. His source? Kali FAQ that says the distro is intended for pentesting 🤦‍♀️

It was probably the only thing I ever got actually infuriated by on the internet. The motivation of pure spite got me playing CP2077 with Path Tracing on Kali by the end of the very same day.

    Still, it just sucks.

It’s purest form pseudo-intellectualism, where people who pretend to think reveal themselves as navigating by vibes alone. I would imagine (but wouldn’t assume outright) that some of those people probably thought: “oh, LainTrain must be a newbie child (like me) and the only reason I’d use it is if I wanted to be l33t and (like me) LainTrain probably doesn’t know anything”.

Even with the redditism of endlessly providing context, people just don’t really read and still just imagine something completely different and attack that instead.

So that’s why I strongly dislike this shit. I would like the default assumption to be “person knows what they are doing and must know what they’re asking or they wouldn’t be asking”.

It’s frankly shocking to me how acceptable this paternalistic attitude got on the internet.

Like - No, it’s actually not progressive or cool to act like a 1950s housewife smelling marijuana every time someone mentions something that doesn’t seem like YouTube essayists would praise and promote.

Other than a technical label of the same species, folks other than you couldn’t be more different and you have no right to dictate to them how to live or what to do, never, no matter what white picket fence gated community ass “culture” “healthy” bullshit you contort.

Your rights end where theirs begin and vice versa and if bro wants to gamble let him gamble.

OP didn’t ask for a lecture. OP didn’t ask to be judged. OP just asked a question about what people do for gambling these days.

So to OP: if you’re still here, I don’t gamble, but I reckon after WSB GameStop saga, lots of folks moved onto CFDs and stuff like PolyMarket, but I see lads betting on horses too. Robinhood is available in the UK now, but we also have eToro. Their KYC is mostly theatre too. Don’t bother with T212 or anything more “legit” it’s impossible to get verified.

  • I never ever thought I’d want to be circumsized. I really enjoyed the sensitivity and all that, blowjobs were awesome etc.

I even remember some PoS noctor pediatrician insisting on it to my parents even as I was like 5-7, which they rightfully called him out on as motivated by his muslim religion/culture rather than sound real medical reasoning.

Even as a kid, it was nice to see my folks stand up to me, and it still matters to my nearly 30 year old ass today when it comes to enjoyment of sex, a whole-ass sex change later.

My also-trans gf said she wished she wasn’t circumsized as well.

  • My life is pretty good. I enjoy myself more often than I don’t, have plenty of hobbies and love learning about the world. I love myself, truly.

I also believe in agency and doing the best you can to reach for what you want.

    However - you are wrong.

You cannot just “quit a job”. If you are fortunate enough to not have your entire life tied to your employment via a visa sponsorship in effective slave labour, that still means a job search in an ever-shrinking job market where increasingly peasants don’t matter as employees not even as consumers as demand and thus supply - shifts towards the ultra rich.

Un(der)mployment is in reality - sky high and most people can’t afford necessities as is, nevermind savings, and if they can, it sure as shit doesn’t make sense to spend a rainy day fund on months of job searching for no reason other than you don’t like your current role in the ever-more-remote hope that you’ll find something better

It’s not impossible of course, but it ain’t an easy decision to make by any means, the hesitation is understandable.

Similarly moving out of the slums is not possible for most due to a housing market that prices out residents and carers towards buy-to-let investors (landleeches) and private equity portfolio builders - there are now more private equity companies in the US than there are McDonald’s, it doesn’t take being an Einstein to see what kind of dark future we’re headed for.

I understand your frustration though and I feel similarly sometimes when people seemingly refuse to make choices that I do - e.g. quitting corpo social media, quitting algorithmic feeds, quitting using corpo products, consooming less corpo junk media, etc. etc.

Like it’s almost existential to me in terms of crisis how anyone could fall for misinformation about a topic you even remotely think about ever when you have the world’s information at your fingertips democratised for you right there, easily indexable and searchable for free, all you need is intellectual honesty and you can learn something at least in the ballpark of accurate truth about literally anything in under an hour at most, yet people don’t.

As a Marxist, I can at least somewhat understand like someone being a homeless fentanyl addict who stabs people in the alley due to economic circumstances out of their control that led them down a terrible path of crime and misery, even terrible as the things they do are - they’re worthy of compassion, and they deserve better, we all do.

But I cannot understand how one could ever be misinformed on anything they even remotely choose to hold an opinion on. Information is literally free as in free beer in most cases.

It’s very easy to say then, “I am super smart, others are not, that’s why I do the right things”, but I’m not satisfied with that explanation, it’s too self-serving and I just don’t buy that I’m anything like that.

There is another explanation - more or less, people are the same, they vary in priorities, but largely are some degree of rational, if chaotic actors that navigate the same systems you do from different starting positions.

Even when the actions seem absurd to you - there are reasons people do the things they do, the gambler and the porch parcel thief aren’t a different species of being from you, they navigate the same systems you do, but from different positions.

Assume they are the same as you, put yourself in their shoes, and think about what could make you do what they do, and it starts to add up, you can simulate the path of another by navigating through the systems of our society from their perspective and starting point.

This sort of systematic analysis is not easy, but it can get at things we can actually affect, the system is necessary, but not natural. The world was built this way, and just the same it can be built differently.

So, perhaps instead of virtue signaling yourself and your own assumed superiority by pointing out how you made good choices and other people make bad choices like some sort of slave mentality moral Christian who divides everyone into those who go to Heaven and those who go to Hell - you can ask, you can research, and think hard, because there are definitely reasons one can’t always follow your suggested actions, even if those reasons are also not an excuse to sit still and do nothing, either.

Anyway you are also an obvious troll and “magical hitachi wand” sounds like an alt of yours.

But I’m leaving this up just in case someone thinks this unironically.

  • Idk his render pipeline breakdown videos seem fairly in-depth. Is it just mumbo-jumbo? I saw some discussion where some devs seemed to acknowledge the perspective but say basically past 10 years of graphics make non-deferred render pipelines utterly unfeasible and thus MSAA, not to mention the issues that TAA “solves” like particularly fine geometry (see guitar strings in TLOUpt.2) or shimmering on stuff that can’t be optimized e.g. hair.

Frankly though I think in practice the difference between graphics in 2015 and 2025 is negligible compared to the difference between TAA (or DLAA/FSR/XeSS/FXAA/SMAA) and x4 MSAA. The only that comes even close is Path Tracing in CP2077.

I agree he seems like a sketchy af grifter, but I’ve not seen a single good rebuttal of his actual points, and even if he was a grifter, that doesn’t invalidate what he’s saying.

That Half-Life Alyx render in flatscreen with MSAA looks better than practically any game I’ve seen.
