A guy I know argues that a ‘better system’ would that the individual shouldn’t be able to vote in higher tier elections. The individual should be able to vote for their local reps. Local reps vote for the fewer regional/county reps, those vote for state, and state then vote for congressional, who then vote and elect the president.

But, if you think Russian (or enemy nation states) were able to infiltrate and sway the 2024 presidential election across 130 million voters… how easy do you think it’d be to do the same across Congress? Hell, they’ve already infiltrated that.

Then let them blow. Why are people getting so wrapped up on a nothing issue. “OMG I bought a house/rented an apartment around people and the people noises are bothering me! These people are the worst!” Instead of “if I wanted peace and quiet I’d move somewhere with peace and quiet instead of complaining about the people I live close to doing people stuff.” Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

Edit: I bought a house on a postage stamp in the middle of the city. My neighbor decided to get a motorcycle this year. Ok, it’s a little loud sometimes. But, it’s the city. Also, my dogs bark sometimes when I’m taking a shit in the morning so I have to rush to bring them inside, and sometimes that’s like 5 minutes of barking at 06:30. I honestly am worried about my neighbors being annoyed by it. So, sure. My neighbor can have a motorcycle. It’s a free world. Other people can blow leaves. My dogs will bark. Getting annoyed by noise and judging people on it, especially when there’s a legitimate reason for it, is absurd. Get upset at the guys making their cars louder or music and cruising relentlessly. But, their dogs barking a little when let out, their motorcycles just turning over before they roll out, or them mowing or blowing leaves? Seems like people are thin skinned when it comes to living in a society here.

What is it with Lemmy and their cult like dislike of leaf blowers. It’s so fucking odd. People low, people drive cars, people drive louder cars, people drive motorcycles and loud mopeds. People blow leaves off of their front porches. It’s wild that normal life things like this set Lemmy off so hard when others don’t.

The shitty thing is, the long lines are by design. Election officials are regularly closing polling locations in inner cities because ‘they don’t have the funding to keep so many open’, when the state government chooses not to fund them. Rural areas have always had quick in-and-out voting merely due to how many people they’re providing for. While increasing the wait times at inner city polling places causes some voters to either not get the chance to vote because either they’re not allowed to at some point, or the extra votes aren’t sent up because they were too late… or it causes people to go home instead of wait in the freezing cold ass line for 4-6 hours. Some people were complaining about 8 hour lines that year.

They cheat to win however they can.

I remember rushing home, changing out of my uniform and jumping in line at the local library… and I stood there for like 4-6 hours in the freezing cold. Rosario Dawson, the actress, actually came by with donuts, back before the republicans outlawed providing food and water to people in voting lines. I actually took a picture of my wife with her, she was so kind. My wife and I were taking turns hiding in the car to stay warm, and saving a place in line. I couldn’t believe how cold and how long the line was. The shitty thing was that it was also extremely windy, the cold bit hard.

This was Atlanta, GA probably for the Biden/Trump election in 2020. I’ve voted early ever since, I walk in and out within like 15 minutes now. I’m not doing 4-6 hour lines ever again.

Edit: poll workers actually came out and designated someone as the last voter, and we stayed in line well past the normal close time. But, they had to get the last person who showed up before close.

My wife, probably the year before last, got a fancy home made from scratch cake for her birthday from her fancy pastry chef friend. Well, she loved the thing so much she’d bring it out for dessert every night, the whole thing, and nibble on small bites until she had enough and put it back in the fridge. Savoring each night and bite. Well, she should have taken a small cut from it each night, leaving the remainder in the fridge, and nibbled on that. Anyway, live and learn. By the end of the week she finished off the cake… and got thoroughly sick over the weekend.

I couldn’t help but laugh a little at the absurdity of the situation, but I felt so bad for her. It was an amazing cake, but yeah. If you’re going to savor something like that, please cut a portion out each night instead of taking it out and putting it back after about 30-45 minutes nightly.

I had a young coworker who reported to me and a few others, for a few months earlier this year. She would come in and say ‘that being said,…’ all the fucking time. I heard it at least once or twice per brief conversation with her. I think she was just trying to sound smart… but, it was like nails on a chalk board to me.

I re-listened to Critical Role Campaign 1, Vox Machina, this year. It was pretty neat, I had caught up with Campaign 3, Hells’ Bells, and needed to give myself enough time to get behind and binge, so I think I did the entire VM story in… idk, 2-3 months? Maybe 4? Just on commutes and work outs.

I’m caught back up with HB, now, though… but, I’m also turning on Late Night comedians on my commutes, to mix it up a little.

You don’t lie, trying to clear every question mark is what killed it for me back when. I think I stopped on the islands somewhere. And every time I pick it back up, the question marks kill it for me again. 😂

In the same vein as your response, I’ve heard people say that they start dreaming in the other language, too, and understanding it. Being a monolinguist myself, I can’t speak with any authority, but my understanding is when you stop thinking about what you say and you’re just saying it, combined with the dreaming in it, is a good identifier.

People who say that they speak whatever random number of languages but it’s only memorized sayings…? Yeah, that’s not* the same thing, you guys.

Edit: I’m married to a Puerto Rican who works in interpretation and translation, just for my credentials here. In one of our last minor tiffs she did mention something about me not learning Spanish and how she felt some kind of way about it… but, hey. Languages are difficult, and there are plenty of relationships where a partner didn’t learn the language and it’s not a big deal. I’m busy and stressed out with work.
