  • You asked a question, I gave an answer. I’m not sure where you get “condescending” there. I was assuming you had read an academic text, so I was hoping that you might have seen those patterns before.

You would look at the data for gaps, as my answer explained. You could use logic to predict some gaps, but not all gaps would be predictable. Mendeleev was able to use logic and patterns in the periodic table to predict the existence of germanium and other elements, which data confirmed, but you could not logically derive the existence of protons, electrons and neutrons without the later experimentations of say, JJ Thompson and Rutherford.

You can’t just feed the sum of human knowledge into a computer and expect it to know everything. You can’t predict “unknown unknowns” with logic.

  • You have to have data to apply your logic too.

If it is raining, the sidewalk is wet. Does that mean if the sidewalk is wet, that it is raining?

There are domains of human knowledge that we will never have data on. There’s no logical way for me to 100% determine what was in Abraham Lincoln’s pockets on the day he was shot.

When you read real academic texts, you’ll notice that there is always the “this suggests that,” “we can speculate that,” etc etc. The real world is not straight math and binary logic. The closest fields to that might be physics and chemistry to a lesser extent, but even then - theoretical physics must be backed by experimentation and data.

  • I had a friend who got into it and would get emotionally upset when I’d make fun of JR Bob Dobbs. Which was depressing, because I felt that was the whole point to Dobbs.

I’ve been a member of the Church for more than ten years and take it more seriously than I should. (I paid my $30 to Bobb when it was $30. Can’t wait for my flying pleasure saucer, already planned for where I’m turning my lasers.)

    What the fuck.

Did they not participate in any form of Subgenius activity, consume any form of Subgenius art? Did they not listen to the Hour of Slack?

Like, listen to the Agent and Mr. Dobbs. Listen to the way we talk about Connie. Listen to the story about the Subgenius who gets lost on their way to to the Devival and ends up getting their corpse gang banged by wolves, dogs and cops. How on earth would you think that you are supposed to be reverent when talking about Bob?

  • That number of articles is still pretty impressive. I’d rather have fewer, high quality articles, than millions of terrible quality AI articles.

The great thing about Wikipedia is that anyone can add articles! It also wouldn’t be too difficult to “translate” regular Wikipedia articles to simple ones. You could even use AI tools to help - there are text leveler tools that will help you recognize which words lower level readers would struggle with and can help you make those changes. But this cannot be an automated process.

I’ve done graduate level course work on modifying text for “EMLs” - “emerging multilingual learners.” (“ELL” is still okay, but lots of folks in the field prefer EML because it is prioritizing the students “assets.”) I’ve made several assignments for students with reading difficulties. When I did experiment a bit with AI tools to help me with this process, I had to do a lot of fine tuning to get an acceptable product.

Tbh, you just convinced me right now that I should start adding more articles myself.
