Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Can piracy be good for the media industry?
10·16 days agoThanks for the link! For those that didn’t want to look at a 100+ page study, a few takeaways:
-
this is from 2014
-
they looked at this from a few angles: film/TV, games, books, and music.
-
they had conclusions for each media type. For example, from the Conclusions section: “The low willingness to pay any price suggests that if the film or TV-series were no longer illegally available, they would not have downloaded the film or TV-series from a pay site.”
-
Music at €0.90 wasn’t too expensive for folks (so they wouldn’t pirate a ton)
-
Confirmed Gabe’s sentiment that “Piracy is a service problem” with books. If books went out of print, they found that Piracy should go up.

And there’s two of them! And what feels like basically no dialogue and just stunt / set piece after stunt.

Technology@lemmy.world•uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off FacebookEnglish
7·1 month agoSince some groups refuse to move off of Facebook, I use an add on to force anything tied to Facebook to its own tab container on Firefox. This is in addition to tampermonkey, ublock, and like 5 other things. I still feel like it’s not enough. They are a privacy nightmare, even on other sites.

Yes. And it was never trying to make fun of the person who originally posted this. It was just artists being artists.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does the US tax people based on citizenship?
10·3 months agoYou have reporting requirements called FATCA and banks have reporting requirements for US customers. It’s annoying to say the least.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Should I switch from Synology Photos to Immich?English
14·4 months agoIf you have all of the photos, then you could use a tool like Immich Go, which would automate much of the tagging and album creation. I don’t know if Immich Go accounts for metadata from Synology. However, Synology might be able to export everything.
I would also recommend putting Immich remote access behind Tailscale (I.e., pointing the remove access server to your tailnet and using that domain name and the Immich port to login).
