I said Hey! What’s going on?
Never slop

I was thinking we throw an arcade cabinet at him?

This was mostly advice from before the patches were available. With no real mitigation or remedy and no patches available, most people opted to simply disconnect the whole thing from the internet, rather than leave a vulnerable system online. The installation of the patches themselves should be very quick and require none to minimal downtime.

The whole productivity boost is such a non-argument. A lot of that code was written by people who don’t know what they are doing, so without the tool they wouldn’t have written any code at all. For the people that do know what they are doing, it helps them shit out code faster. But is that actually a gain in productivity? It would only be the case if the quality remains the same, which in most cases it doesn’t. And if the sloperator took the time to read and understand the code, even review it perhaps, the time gains would evaporate. But we all know good sloperators don’t read or think, they ship! And then there’s the additional workload for the people that have to actually review all of that code the AI pooped out. Especially with complex code this can be very hard and with the increased amount of code submitted, their workload has grown. If we take that extra (harder) work into account, AI is actually making us as a whole less productive.
If the gains were as significant as the slop glazers claim, the results would speak for themselves. In reality we aren’t sure, people THINK they are faster, they might ship shit out faster, but at expense of quality or extra work for others. Software as a whole would be transformed and we would all be in awe, in reality we see a bunch of shitty slop projects on Github, shit out and forgotten within a month. We see more issues than ever before, users are complaining about how bad everything is. Best case scenario you get something that kinda sorta works, good enough, while looking and feeling like icky slop.
It’s been years now, where are the results?

Fucking AI messing up everything. Some devs might choose to use AI, but others who avoid using it are caught in an increasingly impossible situation. AI pervades everything these days. Want to use some tool or library? Good chance it’s been poisoned by AI. I have used automated translation services in the past, as a first pass with a human doing the next iteration. Those used to be just simple dictionary lookups and old school translation matrices, but now all use AI. Buy an asset collection? Better hope nobody snuck AI generated ones in there without disclosure.
It’s bizarre how quickly our whole world has went to shit with AI. And how many people just go with it. I have people in my life complaining about how expensive computer hardware has become and how they hate Instagram and tiktok being filled with slop, only for these same people rave about how quickly they can make presentations at work with copilot. And how much time they saved with Claude. Like they are part of the problem and don’t even see it.
And don’t forget, an animal is much less likely to eat a whole bottle with the cap attached than they are eating a bottle cap by mistake.
It’s just a win all around and the people who get angry about them are just selfish assholes.
.NET framework has been discontinued for years now with .NET platform being the official successor. It’s no longer called .NET core. If one started with framework, moving over to platform is very easy as it’s the exact same language. If thet were on framework still, it would mean they haven’t updated in years, which would be weird and not recommended.
It makes no sense, .NET is fully supported on Linux and has been for years. There is an official SDK and it’s capable of creating full standalone executables, or smaller ones requiring the runtime libraries to be installed on the target system. As far as I know good packages exist for just about any distro. .NET is fully open source and not just worked on by Microsoft, but a large community.
Creating a Linux executable from any .NET code is as simple as running a single command, it supports cross platform compilation as well. With support for a range of architectures and OSes.
The only caveat is all the code needs to be properly managed code, any unmanaged code is most likely not cross platform compatible and is thus not recommended. It can even break as drivers or the OS is updated for example, so it’s a bad idea to have unmanaged code and usually not needed.
If you make that face, it’ll stay like that.
I was told this as well, so I’d try to look as sad, afraid and angry as possible. I’d contort my face for hours, trying to push the corners of my mouth down till it hurt. I wanted it to stay like that, so when I went to school the next day somebody would ask me what’s wrong and I could tell them about my father beating the shit out of me every day. Unfortunately, it did not stay and nobody asked.

Perhaps, I was thinking about it in terms of furniture the other day. Like most people just go for their factory made, flatpack, cheap IKEA or IKEA-like furniture. But at the same time there is a whole industry of craftspeople out there making beautiful furniture by hand. Some people go out of their way to get something carefully crafted just for them, or make something themselves because it adds soul.
Nobody really knows what the future will be like, but I hope there will always be a space for things created with love and soul, no matter what.

For the downvoters: This kind of AI is nothing like generative AI / LLMs. This is the kind of AI that’s actually been used for decades and has proven very good at handling large amounts of data. Machine learning excels at ingesting huge amounts of data and doing stuff like pattern analysis and predictions. The advancements in hardware have meant larger models, that can handle more data with more precision and weather prediction is one of the places where these advancements have shown good results.
So don’t just downvote because AI bad. I fucking hate genAI and what the handful of AI companies are trying to push onto people. But machine learning in data analysis is actual science and a good thing.
Also: Weather systems are chaotic by nature and by that I mean chaotic like in Chaos theory (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_theory) often misunderstood and misquoted. But it means very small variations can have huge effects. That’s why the prediction van be 90% confident and still be absolutely wrong. That’s inherent in how these systems work and cannot be fixed. So better weather prediction does not mean perfect weather prediction.

Because he told the idiots he would make everything better. But in Trump language that means better for himself and his cronies, not the idiots that voted for him.

Does your bank not offer this as a basic service? I think most banks do.
You can assign incoming and outgoing transactions into folders and do stuff like assign repeating transactions automatically to a folder and set targets. So you can make a folder “Saving for a new car” and occasionally add some money to that. Or create a folder “Rent money” and make sure it’s topped off and rent payments always go out of that folder. You can setup so a part of your wage automatically gets assigned to that folder for example, so you can easily see how much you have left after assigning money to stuff like rent/mortgage and a food budget for example.
I thought all banks offered this, but it might be different in other countries, or perhaps a paid service?
But even if the bank doesn’t offer this, people used to do this in spreadsheet software or dedicated software for years. And even before that, a lot of people used to do this kind of stuff in a little book. In a lot of languages there is even a name for this called Haushaltsbuch in German and Kakeibo in English (from Japanese). I used to do it in Lotus 1-2-3 back in the 80s, later in the 90s I think I had Microsoft Money which worked pretty good, but a spreadsheet was more flexible.
So nobody is stopping you, you can just do this.

Yeah I can already see it, everything that is wrong, yeah its the Dems fault. We really really want to fix it, but those damned Dems are blocking everything.
I would not be surprised shit goes to absolute hell by the end of the year with the AI bubble popping and we get another terrible Republican president because of the timing with the election now.

Can’t even use sarcasm on the internet these days, thanks Obama!
Gen Z is addicted to vaping: https://www.chestnet.org/guidelines-and-topic-collections/publications/chest-advocates/gen-z-is-hooked-on-vaping Gen A is a bit young, but the older Gen As are included in the stats and follow the exact pattern as Gen Z.
As for how bad vaping is, is a bit more difficult, as it’s a more recent thing than smoking is. But indications are it’s better than smoking but it’s far from safe. This site had a good overview with sources: https://www.healthline.com/health/is-vaping-worse-than-smoking-cigarettes
