I was at an animal shelter and I saw a dog stop playing with visitors, walk to his mattress, pee directly on it, and then return to playing. Meanwhile my ferret would sleep in his litter box. One time, I tried to teach him what it was actually for by moving some of his poop there. He gave me a “What the hell, did you just shit in my bed?” look that I hadn’t thought animals were capable of.
(Fun fact: ferrets poop in corners. I don’t know what they would do in the wild where there are fewer walls that meet at right angles. I made a second attempt to teach my ferret to use the litter box by putting his food in every corner of the cage except the one with the box in it. He pooped on the food.)
