If someone hates their current last name and likes a fictional character’s last name, like Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne, Danny Rand, or Clark Kent, and legally changes their last name to one of those, would it cost them job opportunities?

Depends on the name. Stark, Wayne, Rand, Kent are all actual human names.

“Von Doom” - Yeah, you’ll have problems.

Sure - first of all, your job application might be rejected as spam when you are naming yourself Sauron McSauronface. Depending on which character you are naming yourself after, people might also think that you are an idiot. If you name yourself Patrick Bateman, they might not want you to work in that kindergarden because your choice tells them a lot about you.

A name is just a name to me.

But if I was to hire someone, I would not trust a person that so badly needs to identify to some fictional ‘super-hero’ that think they’re above the law and they can do what the funk they want or, as a reader myself, to anyone needing to identify to any famous fictional novel character either.

First off, all of those are actually normal names. I’ve met two Wayne families in the last year, unrelated. Most super hero secret identity names were picked to be very common.

Second, you’re not likely to lose any job opportunities unless the name you pick is genuinely uncomfortable for people to say. If you change your name to “Joe Fuctphace” you’re not going to be taken seriously.

Third, from personal experience, having a fake sounding name actually gets me more opportunities across the board. I changed my name in marriage to take my spouse’s last name and make the name I’ve been using for ages official. I’m frequently told that it’s such a cool name, places are more likely to get my order right when I call them in, and I’m more memorable in the interview process. My favorite interaction with strangers is when someone is like, “I love you name,” and I get to respond, “Thanks! I picked it myself!” Normally it leads to a fun chat and occasionally a new friend.

If your kid wants to change their name to “Newman,” “Forrester,” or “Carrington” it won’t cost them jobs. Grim.

Beat me to it. I was going to say “ask yourself why you don’t post under the GrimReaper handle, and you’ll have answered your own question.”

Ask Hitler’s descendants who have changed their name.

In the most extreme circumstances, yes, people will distance themselves from a disgraced name. Hitler, Epstein, and soon to be Trump. Like right now the name is still connected to power (as well as the atrocities) so it still helps those who have it, but once the king is deposed in a few years, it’ll be different.

Even web handles carry weight. I had a pretty legendary username once. I had movies named after (but not about) me. I got tired of being Internet famous, so I dropped it. Of course Internet fame is very subjective; I mean obviously I was big enough that movies were being named after me, the name was inspiring in some way to people with money (but apparently not enough to offer me any, not like I ever copyrighted or trademarked it), but if you hadn’t heard of me, I wouldn’t be surprised. I used to be on one community for a popular game once. Another community for that game made a mod for it and put a lot of their popular members in the game. (I’ll tell you this one. The game is Deus Ex, the mod is The Nameless Mod, and the forum was Planet Deus Ex (part of the GamePlanet network).) I didn’t know who any of those people were. But in their community, they were legends. Like the bad guy, Scara B. King was this really famous troll there (scarab king), and they put him in the game. You’re supposed to know these people, but you only would if you were in that community. It’s like that, I guess. (Sidebar: Scara B. King was an awesome character and I loved listening to him, and how he’d get your name wrong every single time. Not sure who voiced him (the real person behind the name, or someone else) but they did an excellent job.)

    It depends on the industry.

Actors and other people who have branded their names it will.
