Journalists have always used the old postal abbreviations. It’s part of the Associated Press style.

What’s Ga. Va. and Gt.
Georgia, Virginia, and Vt. is Vermont.
Yes but people are now too stupid to know them.
Yes but the average NYT reader doesn’t know them.
