In general I agree with the sentiment, but this was definitely not the case with Oblivion.

The things I distinctly associate with Oblivion (other than jank) are emerald green hills and the overly bloomy lighting. They are absent in the remake and replaced with a more standard UE5 look. It looks good, but I don’t think it captures the original

I have mixed feeling on this.

The remaster really does look great, and it’s clear they put a lot of passion and love into it.

But “atmosphere” is a tricky concept, and I didn’t feel like the remaster really captured the original’s. Instead it replaced it with its own more “epic” atmosphere. The difference is most jarring to me with NPCs. The corny, cheesy vibes they give off take me right out of the new “epic” tone. But in the original, it all just fits.

I see what you’re saying, but Bethesda’s dialogue transitions have always been jarring so it didn’t really fuck it up for me.

That’s fair. And I wouldn’t say it fucked it up for me, I still enjoyed the remaster quite a lot (though I actually did wind up doing a much longer modded play through of the original right after… cuz many more better mods). But it really did highlight how different the atmosphere and tone were.

To be fair, during exploration, I found the remaster’s atmosphere to be an improvement. It felt a lot more immersive.

100% agree on the exploration atmosphere. I’ve got like 130-140 hours in it, and probably a third of that is just deciding to not fast travel to an objective and getting lost in the forest checking out random stuff.

Idk the new version crashes more than the old version without any mods. I could try it now that I am on Linux but when I left my windows PC it straight up wouldnt launch anymore.
