America has separate primaries for the political parties. You’re only allowed to vote in one per election, and they know which one you picked. So if you voted in the Democratic primary, they know you’re either a Democrat or a strategically-voting Republican.
Does America not have a secret ballot?

And even in states with open primaries they can see which primary elections you tend to vote in, and identify your party affiliation that way.
