US chicken companies pioneered restricting sleep to keep birds eating around the clock.
A new study (Li et al., 2026) recommends giving chickens just 2 hours of darkness nightly to maximize the time they spend eating. The study and photo are Chinese.
We know chickens have far better hapiness with 7–8 hours of darkness to sleep.
But they eat more when they are sleep restricted.
Reports like these are the reason I couldn’t stand eating meat anymore. Went vegetarian first but learned soon that vegetarism is just meat eating with extra steps. Everything thats for vegetarians but not vegan contributes to the same suffering as eating meat.
It’s all worth it even with all the shit I get to eat from other guys for being a vegan man.
Get a vegan cookbook, vegan suppliments and be part of the change.
This is beyond fucked up…I cant stand what we do to animals.
Another post comes out highlighting yet one more of the enumerable ways we humans absolutely ruin the lives of other animals. Like clockwork, the few people who actually take the simple, reasonable steps to approach a better way of life get dogpiled by all the others who have their bag of holding ready with every stale excuse and outright lies about veganism to continue the status quo.
We are in a thread about one form of cruelty towards chickens - only one small part of an entire supply chain of fucked up that is going on right now more than ever - which would probably lead to a whole multiple weeks of news and outrage and lawsuits if it was done to humans.
And you decided that your goal was going to be to come in here and automatically decenter the conversation away from the animals because you wanted to argue with vegans?
Listen, whatever your self identity is, if you are doing what you can to stop supporting these things, that’s awesome I’m proud of you. I do not care about identity politics, especially when it gets into the No True Scottsman obnoxiousness. If you are doing what you can, with what you have, that is good enough for now. And I hope you’re able to feel inspired to push things further.
But if your whole thing is to just come into these posts to argue with vegans, first of all, get a real job. Second, look, I don’t care to frame things around whether someone is good or bad. We all just do things, and there are consequences for those things for better or worse. This isn’t about vegans, this is about literally every species of animal on the planet, both including and excluding us.
Every time we pay for an animal product, we are complicit in all the things being done to both humans and other animals to get that product. That is the cold hard reality. That is never going to go away unless we all collectively change.
Ok a surface-level duckduckgo of “Li et al 2026” only gives me twitter that’s related (which’s also an unlinked image)
I seen similar claims that DO actually have sources before, so I know this type of stuff happens in the meat industry, but still please link the sources.
I wasn’t able to find the article on Google Scholar or Kagi either. Given that “Li” is the second most common surname in the world, it would be nice to have a bit more for a reference.
Not letting people sleep 8 hours naturally does the same thing.
Before capitalism, people used to only kill as many animals as were necessary to feed them, all while ensuring they don’t suffer needlessly and respecting their natural habitats.
Under capitalism, animals are just resources to be extracted and turned into products and profits. The conditions of this extraction may vary slightly, but ultimately this is never going to change under a system that fundamentally removes humans from nature, as well as focuses on accumulation of capital above all else.
Before capitalism, people used to only kill as many animals as were necessary to feed them
Are you serious? Abusing animals for sport and gambling was widespread, across many cultures, millennia before modern capitalism.
The Wikipedia article on bloodsport lists plenty of examples of human on animal or animal on animal violence to the death.
And that’s to say nothing of the use of non-consenting human slaves for blood sport.
There’s something to be said for the cruelty of industrialized slaughter, but let’s not pretend that human cruelty to animals isn’t part of our nature that predates capitalism.
Foie gras was developed like half a millenia ago… humans have always had the capacity for and willingness to be cruel for our own individual betterment. There was never any “before” time that we can go back to where there werent shitty people doing shitty things. We have been exploiting and exterminating animals for centuries and centuries, we just have the best tools to do it, that weve ever had now.
Half a millennia ago was about the same time as early-modern capitalism was developed… It’s just a coincidence I’m sure, but still thought it was funny to point out. That being said, I agree with you that there wasn’t a time “before people were shitty”, but I must point out that we’ve developed tech to such a level that we’re actively destroying our own environment. Also, OP is correct when they said that we actively shifted from killing what was needed and saving the rest for later, to our current profit-driven method of breeding and butchering as many animals as physically possible just for the sake of selling more and keeping the machines running efficiently.
I’d be willing to forgive all of that if we were somehow able to eliminate hunger through these production methods (something well within our capability to accomplish), but having worked in the food service industry for over a decade, being told to throw away pounds and pounds and pounds of perfectly good food every day, watching coworkers get punished for even ASKING if they could take any of it home, and constantly given some bullshit reasoning of “oh we wouldn’t want to be sued if someone claims they ate our food and got sick” as the sole justification to why it was immediately trashed, I’m honestly just sick of all the bullshit. The fact that we have a hyper-efficient food industrial complex that produces more than we know what to do with AND a nation-wide food-affordability problem that seems to exclusively effect the most vulnerable, should not be two facts that coexist
I must point out that we’ve developed tech to such a level that we’re actively destroying our own environment.
that would be the advent of agriculture probably, and i’m an early 19th century CE history nerd not a beginnings of civilization history nerd wikipedia can teach you better than i can
i mean, i grew up near an ancient american indian limestone mine. I do not know the history well enough, but i hear there was a sizeable city. the second ghost town on the site (built in the 1900s) reached a population of around 500. I hear that was the small one, but again, you’re getting it from an unreliable narrator after a few hundred to a thousand years.
The “early 19th century CE history nerd” trying to detract from the harmful consequences of the Industrial Revolution by trying to claim ‘we’ve always been like that’? I never could’ve seen this coming 🙄
You know all too well what I’m talking about. In fact, by your own admission, you should know it better than me. So the fact that you’re so eager to use one of the oldest (and weakest) rhetorical defenses in the book should speak volumes to anyone else listening/reading this
yes, i do know all too well what you’re talking about. when do you expect the land around the limestone mine to recover? and when was it opened?
aww, i’m sorry my data point (and i can provide more if you’d like) disagrees with your argument so you want to fall back onto the old ben shapiro debate style.
Around the same time you stop using whataboutisms and goal-post-shifts to attempt to win all your arguments. So probably never in our lifetimes
I did work in warehouse of a company that sells perishables on amazon. There were times in summer when half the inventory would get molds or maggots.
It was apparently still cheaper than keeping everything refrigerated tho because the company simply bought twice as much food needed and simply let them go to waste.
There was still some time where pre-industrial husbandry including breeding of animals was a thing and capitalism didn’t exist in the form we criticise it now.
Capitalism wasn’t the cause of animal cruelty, no. You’re spot-on there. But OP is correct that there was a shift between ‘killing what was needed/could be stored’, to what we currently have which is ‘get as many animals through the process as quickly as possible for the sake of profit’. And now we have a problem of having so much food available for businesses and not enough available for individuals (or at least not for a comparable cost). Having worked in the food service industry for over a decade, being told to throw away pounds and pounds and pounds of perfectly good food every day, watching coworkers get punished for even ASKING if they could take any of it home, and constantly given some half-assed reasoning of “oh we wouldn’t want to be sued if someone claims they ate our food and got sick” (even though that would be the simplest court case possible, almost an automatic win for the business if it even got to that point) as the sole justification to why it was immediately trashed, I’m honestly just sick of all the bullshit.
Completely unrelated to food or animals, I personally also know this from the tech industry. Instead of giving away old devices to schools or for universities, you rather shredder them because support may be expensive, it may canibalize the sale of newer devices, etc. Millions of dollars just made to e-waste because the system is sick. I am sure every industry has these stories.
Even humans are resources bro under capitalism.
I’ve always thought human resources was a creepy way to describe a group of people.
yes, animals are resources under capitalism.
Shit like this is why I’m trying to plan my path to vegetarian and then to veganism. I hate that I know I’ll relapse if I don’t do it slowly.
Every step counts. 🥳
If you want to really see horror, you can watch the film “Earthlings”.
2006, 2024 or 2025?
The one I saw was probably the 2006 one. Last I knew you can watch it on YT
If i had magic powers i would transform the people who make decisions like this into an animal under their own care
if I had magic powers, I would cast a spell that’d make everyone have the common sense to not lose their shit over a unverified picture and unsourced claim.
name checks out.
Even if this is false, it’s not like a chicken’s life is a string of spa days

“Even if this is false, I’ve already fallen into the outrage trap and I’ll be damned if I’ll ever admit wrong, So I’m just going to shift the goalposts”
No outrage trap on my side. I just think that your comment is despicable.
I don’t know how I’ll live with myself, knowing you hate critical thinking so much.
Animal cruelity in general has been proven enough times to justify transformation powers for me
Any random idiot would agree
No, not even a random idiot believes any random unverified claim… and they are even more suspicious of things that tickles their fancy and aligns with what they want to hear, because they are aware of how easy it is to slip into complacency and sacrifice their critical thinking for comfortable outrage.
Also, even a random idiot could do a cursory search to find
§ 205.241 Avian living conditions.
For layers and all other fully feathered birds, artificial light may be used to prolong the day length, to provide up to 16 hours of continuous light per 24-hour period (i.e., minimum of 8 hours of continuous darkness per 24-hour period). Artificial light intensity should be lowered gradually to encourage hens to move to perches or settle for the night. Artificial light spectrum may not be manipulated to increase feed intake and growth rate.
But that doesnt let us wallow in comfortable outrage, so of course we’re not gonna do that.
May not be allowed to be manipulated… according to what country? A random Google search can pull from any country’s standards, EU ones are some of the best. With that said, I was not able to find a reliable source for this purported study, either.

like sneering slurs at a civil rights demonstration. I hope you grow enough to feel ashamed.
Is animal torture funny to you?
Pretty sure that one is already dead.
In a thread about animal suffering, they posted an animation clearly depicting an end result of that suffering, which is obviously meant to mock the situation. Therefore, animal suffering is funny to them.
suffering of any kind isn’t funny.
but it sure is delicious.
Damn, doubling down, bold move. I appreciate the honesty, thanks for signaling to others that you are probably not a safe person to be around. 👍
I am looking forward to the day that cloned meat is an thing. It would likely save on resources, be more sanitary, and would prevent the suffering of animals for our pleasure.
However much I enjoy my chicken tenders, I would like less awful to be involved for getting them onto my tastebuds.
If it’s been a while since you tried them, I’d suggest any of the plant-based tender options. Some of them are so good, I’d choose them over animal tenders even if I weren’t vegan.
What if you found out that “cloned meat” had a partial brain - like the made a chicken with a partial brain - just enough to grow it - fed through tubes - would that be better or worse than now?
Some of the science meat companies make more of an effort than others to reduce or eliminate their dependence on animals, though it’s still not a perfect situations. Have fun with the utilitarians you just invited though. 💩
Except that it doesn’t? Lol.
fuck this a thousand times. hens deserve better.

I’ve been a vegetarian for 27 years and you make me want to eat a hamburger. There’s some great advice in this thread about how to begin transitioning to veganism.
And then there’s you.
Some vegan asshole who wouldn’t let me go on my way (I had to wave at a police officer) told me being vegan is easy, you just have to eat carbs. I’m vegetarian, I live in an area where most people are obsessed with eating meat, but he insisted on having a go at me.
I just have my own hens bro, they’re happy, they live good lives.
This is a stupid fucking take and an overgeneralization. I for example buy certified humane pasture raised eggs from my local co-op that are supplied from farms literally within an hour’s drive away.

Not necessarily, you don’t have to be a vegan to not eat chicken or eggs. What about people who only eat seafood, although that is getting increasingly unsustainable with the amount people eat.
What about just eat the invasive things? Honestly would be tempted to if I could legally do it without a shitload of paperwork and licensing to worry about. Though you don’t need a license to catch fish in the sea here the only invasives I am aware of are freshwater or land animals which all require permission.
I’m not vegan and I don’t support this.
People support this with their wallets. It’s simple supply and demand.
I do not :)
Then you would either be vegan or a hunter.
Neither, I just don’t purchase from these companies. I couldn’t even if I wanted to, the described practice is illegal where I live.
If I want an “ethical” chicken, I can buy one. A five pound bird cost $40. Are you rich? lol Or you have your own farm.
If you purchase meat from these companies - you very much do.
If you don’t want to - there’s an extremely obvious solution available.
Ultimately all manner of meat consumption in industrial societies amounts to genocide and torture. All we’re doing is slightly negotiating the degree of suffering inflicted.
Veganism means we don’t give a space to farm animals anymore. We (humans) have modified them in such way they can’t survive in nature ; especially in the few nature we would let them. How can it have an other result than the genocide of all that species?
Industrial exploitation of animals count as torture and should be stoped for that, yes. But it is not a genocide: it makes sure the species remain alife. The genocide is vegan.
Welfarism seems to me the research of the best compromise: keep that species alife and in better conditions.
You would wind down reproduction over time like anything else. Chickens, ehem, non meat chickens, roost in trees. Im near certain chickens, would have predators yes, but theyd be alright.
to be vegan is to genocide the farm breeds is a wild take
I am sorry, I think I did not understand your argument nor on what it was based. Could you please reformulate it?
I do not purchase meat from those companies
Do you eat vegan meat replacement products? Did you know the world’s largest meat supplier (JBS) owns many of the companies that make them? So do Danone (dairy company), Müller (dairy company) and Nestlé (just vile in general).
This is true, the choices aren’t great. But even that being the case, you are still sending a signal to those companies which kinds of products you’d prefer to buy.
A lot of grocery stores have data-driven inventory systems now. Buying more plant-based options does ultimately help more of them become available.

An all or nothing stance is part of the problem though. If doing good is defined in a way that is difficult for people to achieve, they will feel like they can’t do good and give up before they started.
Anything we do to improve the lives of animals or remove some suffering does exactly that.
Going vegan is not difficult.
Going vegan is wrong. Going vegetalian may be right, but comes with extra needs.
Going vegan is wrong because it leeds you to choose clothes made out of petrol rather than wool, while wool would last longer and need less ressources on the long run. It leeds you to choose your food from fields using petrol engines to be farmed and reject those using animal traction.
Yes, there are not much field cultivated with animal traction. And this has caused a near extinction of the animals used for traction. Those saved are risen by humans, so non-vegan friendly. Going vegan is willing the extinction of all animals risen by human unless they can still handle themselves in nature.
Vegetalians may agree at measure to let animals survive thanks to human interactions, and could accept some domestication of animals. They may use wool, they may accept vegetables arrived to the market carried by a donkey (and prefer them for that reason to the ones bringed by a truck).
Yet, to be vegetalian, you need a good access to medicine, in order to check you remain healthy, and to correct the mistakes you may make. This access isn’t easy everywhere in the world.
vegetalian
Apparently this isn’t a diet where you only eat Italian food. I’m disappointed.
So how much is the animal ag industry paying you?
Are all those who disagree with you paid by someone to be part of a great conspiracy?
Nope, only those who have a suspicious preoccupation with arguing against vegans specifically, especially when their arguments are cartoonishly dumb and aimed directly at demonizing the very people who are just trying to make the world less cruel.
Weird mind gymnastics you’re doing here.
Going vegan is wrong because it leeds you to choose clothes made out of petrol rather than wool, while wool would last longer and need less ressources on the long run. It leeds you to choose your food from fields using petrol engines to be farmed and reject those using animal traction.
Cotton, manual labor and electric engines.
Yes, there are not much field cultivated with animal traction. And this has caused a near extinction of the animals used for traction. Those saved are risen by humans, so non-vegan friendly. Going vegan is willing the extinction of all animals risen by human unless they can still handle themselves in nature.
Then we should help animals thrive in the wild. Stop hunting, stop killing forests, stop taking their land, and all that stuff. You mentioned none of those.
Vegetalians may agree at measure to let animals survive thanks to human interactions, and could accept some domestication of animals. They may use wool, they may accept vegetables arrived to the market carried by a donkey (and prefer them for that reason to the ones bringed by a truck).
The current living cows, pigs and chickens are bred to extreme artificial amounts for your pleasure. This is not natural. If we stop breeding more animals and kill off the remaining alive ones, eventually it will balance itself out again. We are not helping them by breeding them and killing them. That’s a selfish fallace so you can sleep at night.
Yet, to be vegetalian, you need a good access to medicine, in order to check you remain healthy, and to correct the mistakes you may make. This access isn’t easy everywhere in the world.
You do not. I personally do a blood check every year just in case. Funnily enough I only had a tiny vitamin D deficiency because I worked inside a lot. Besides that I just eat what I want, vegan of course. I merely added legumes and beans to my diet, and changed some meat things in my dishes for more veggies. It’s really that easy. Super easy and you’ll actually be even more healthy because meat is not healthy.
Your fallace comes from claiming there are only two ways, the hard industrial process or the vegan way (which requires hard industry too).
There are other ways, efficient enough, if we step out of consumerism and capitalism. Yet, if we don’t step out of that, your plan to let natural places to wild animals is an unrealistic dream, so I guess we agree to step out of that (tell me if I am wrong).
Accepting manual labor question me a lot, since one of the base argument of veganism is that human is an ordinary animal and so have no right over other animals. But so, I don’t get how you finally accept productions of humans but not those of other animals. Even when the human workers have no choice but are exploited by a system torturing them.
In my view, it is not a question of right humans would have over other animals. We inherit of a situation. Our ancestors have forced many animals into an unfair contract where we protect them of other predators and take care of their needs, in exchange of their production and meat. It was unfair from start. We have built our civilizations thanks to that unfair contract. Now that we reached a technological level which allow us to do without them, we would just fire them and let them try to survive on their own in the lands we accept to let them?
Wouldn’t it be more moral to have more consideration for those we have forced to be our allies? The contract was already not fair, cancelling it just because it is not at our benefice enough anymore is not something I see as a superior morality.
I don’t understand your point. It makes no sense. What do you want exactly? You want to keep them in farms but not eat them? Or keep them in farms and still eat them? Your argument is incomprehensible. There is no such thing as overnight veganism. And as we move towards a vegan society, animal numbers will normalize and become natural again. That’s just a fact.
It is difficult to get adequate nutrition on a vegan diet.
It requires being able to read about nutrition and putting that knowledge into practice - which involves making meal plans that take into account the various mineral and vitamin requirements that we have in order to be healthy.
There are significant accessibility barriers when it comes to eating a healthy, vegan diet.
It is not an easy feat for the abled, and in addition there are factors such as socio-economic status and associated challenges that can make it less accessible for people.
I made a vegan meal the other weekend for an estimated $5. Enough to feed 8 or 9 servings.
Lentils, onion, carrot, flour, spices, oil. Vegan food is poverty food, and it can be very tasty. Socio-economic status associate challenges is … not an acceptable answer though.
I generally find it exasperating to discuss matters within this topic with Americans, as there is a lack of acknowledgement regarding class issues. I’m sorry for the generalization, but I just don’t have the energy.
Socio-economic and class issues are more than the price of ingredients. But you are right that buying ingredients to cook a plant-based meal can be low cost.
issuea related to a lack of time are generally skill issues
It is difficult to get adequate nutrition on a vegan diet.
It is not. Eat your legumes, beans and some nuts and look for B12 fortified foods. That’s it. Keep in mind that most people are unhealthy on non vegan diets, and that meat is fortified with B12 too because the animals don’t get it in nature. So it’s but a small change for an equal nutritious diet.
It requires being able to read about nutrition and putting that knowledge into practice - which involves making meal plans that take into account the various mineral and vitamin requirements that we have in order to be healthy.
Again, not really. Same counter argument as before.
There are significant accessibility barriers when it comes to eating a healthy, vegan diet.
This is true. Fast food becomes hard to find, so you’ll have to actually start cooking now and then, which is something a lot of unhealthy non-vegans are scared of. Besides that everything is already available in every first world country supermarket.
It is not an easy feat for the abled, and in addition there are factors such as socio-economic status and associated challenges that can make it less accessible for people.
It is an easy feat. But you are correct about your “status” in society. You’ll often get people trying to argument against being vegan. And those are all the same arguments you’ve heard thousands of times, all of which have long been disproven. They’ll tell you you are unhealthy and that it’s hard, but it’s easy and you’re more healthy than them. You get people coming up with arguments not because they believe them, but because they want to believe them, so it justifies their own non-animal-friendly diet. It can be hard, but only because other people make it hard like you do.
I don’t make it hard. I would love it, if it were easier, but unfortunately it isn’t.
It is difficult to get the adequate nutrients on a vegan diet. Research the required nutritional values for your age, gender and body type. Type the values into a nutritional application and track your food intake throughout a certain period, the longer the better. With no diet planning on a vegan diet, it is unlikely that you will get adequate nutrition.
It’s true that people who do not adhere to a vegan diet can be unhealthy. The difference is that their diet does not set them up to be unhealthy if they eat healthy ingredients and do not plan their food intake. If you are vegan, don’t plan your meals on the basis of nutritional knowledge, and only eat otherwise healthy ingredients, you are still at risk of becoming unhealthy because of malnutrition.
You come off as someone who is generally privileged and has no respect for the different barriers that people face.
You are wrong.
Instead of downvoting, I would love to hear your counter argument.
I didn’t downvote your reply. I suggest using some client or service that shows who downvoted you before making assumptions, like you do about being vegan.
I didn’t address you specifically, rather the people who downvoted.
My comment is based on science-based nutritional facts, not assumptions.
I am not coming for you. I am simply trying to have a discussion based on facts.
How fast do you shovel down your food? You should enjoy it some more … oh, right, I’d probably also would want it to be over quickly if I had to eat vegan.

Is that why animal abusers season their animal flesh with…… plants?
Hey, I don’t discriminate. I eat all the kingdoms of life!
any archea in that diet?
Probably, I have some in my mouth right now!
That is nonsense and just plain dumb. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Modern day agriculture is reliant on livestock to keep our current levels of farming efficiency. Farming aimals is a requirement for modern agriculture.
We just eat to much meat, eating no meat at all will cause so much more problems than veganism would solve.
The vegans are right.
Always were.
Why do you think the meat industry has to perpetually expend capital to drag their cause through the mud ?
and the pandemics
What the hell are they using to entice them to eat 24/7
Doomscrolling
i don’t suppose meat that’s bigger but full of stress hormones from the torture of it can be chalked as that much of a win, meat industry.
