That’s always been my position, IMO - it does have some genuinely useful applications, but we’ve blown it up into this huge thing and tried to shoehorn it into everything, and it’s polarized people into these “AI in everything” and “AI in nothing” camps.

Yep, it’s like that saying about the infinite number of monkeys. AI is extremely ineffective in general, but if you don’t care about the time and resources it consumes, it can be used for a lot of stuff very well. You just need to be a little bit more creative than simply asking it to do your job for you.
the important part of the calculation isn’t just that AI has to do something effectively, it has to do it effectively in a way that’s more cost-efficient than getting some guy in india to do it. right now those costs are heavily subsidized by investment and a vanishingly small portion will be above water once the tide comes back in.
Contemporary AI encourages harmful behaviours, nobody who have used AI denies its usefullness but it is unethical. Look at the layoffs, datacenter caused environment destruction, AI psychosis etc.
Unfortunately, we humans have destructive tendencies and AI just accelerates that. What we need is to slow down or ban AI outright (imho), then fix our issues like world hunger, climate crisis, housing crisis etc. first

The first two are corporate problems caused by capitalism. In case you haven’t figured it out let me spell it out for you. Corporations will do anything to get out of paying people who work for them, and they will continue to build useless shit that destroys the environment whether AI is involved or not.
The third one might have some truth to it, there’s potential for studies. But when people online talk about it. They’re talking about people doing things they personally find weird or unsettling, and their response is to call people who are weird “crazy” or “delusional”. As someone who practices Witchcraft and gets called ableist slurs for it. I’m not going to humor this trend of calling people crazy for doing things others find weird or unsettling.
I will accept discussions about it when they are based on real science and use Psychosis legitimately. So far I’ve found few online discussions which do.

I think we can collectively ignore irrational folks, whether lovers or haters.
We really should, and more often.
The thing is, that’s kinda how we got here: ignoring the idiots and assclowns also included taking our collective eyes off of them…
