Far from sovereignty, but the US has historically had a vested interest in keeping Taiwan separate from China, regardless of what each other party wants. They’ve kept up just enough of a presence in the south China sea to deter a direct attack but not enough to guarantee true sovereignty, whether or not Taiwan actually wants it.
Flattery gets you everywhere with Trump, so it makes sense they’d be told that. If they kiss his ass enough he’ll just give them Taiwan.
