A parenthetical is more likely to be used in normal discourse than a word bookended by colons
As someone who gets annoyed every time a text smiley like :) gets automatically converted to an emoji 🙂, I think that having a total separation from common sentence usage makes sense.

I got the emoji list up all the time on Teams when I didn’t want it. Apparently I use brackets a lot.
This is much better IMO.
Although they could have told us. That would have been nice.
Copy paste the whole wiki face with one extra spacd at the end. Remove the space if necessary.
