Just curious about how he got eased into involuntarily having that revealed and settled and how the messaging was handled

It was Gawker. I wasn’t paying all that much attention to the story at the time, but he retaliated against them by financing Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against them.
Gawker didn’t like that he was a closet gay man using his wealth as a weapon against the LGBT community, so they outed him. He had problems trying to sue them because they didn’t report anything false. When the Hogan tape was leaked, it was considered revenge porn so, Thiels used the wealth to get the revenge on Gawker
