I have BPD and so music can have a profound effect on my mood. I tend to match the mood of the song (the lyrics, tho, unless all instrumental) so anything positive feels good. Unfortunately, my tastes gravitate more toward dark, depressing shit. A lot of Grunge and similar sounding genres. I’ve more recently been only adding things to my big playlist when they are uplifting. The last few on there are songs from K-Pop Demon Hunters… 🫣
man, I’ve heard a lot of nice things about K-Pop Demon Hunters. but even when the early waves of K-Pop going global (think SNSD era. at least that’s my gateway) I was lukewarm on the genre, let alone the more contemporary ones now.
that’s true. I don’t like the ones that are on the radio in my country. It’s too poppy and, idk, vapid?
but there are truly gems out there. The other day a friend played a Korean hip hop song that has nujabes vibes. I have to ask him again for the song and artist.
Also, I’ll check out the r&b songs you recommended below.
I’m gonna take a wild guess that your friend played a song by Primary. He’s a hiphop/r&b producer who collaborates with other artists to sing on his songs, similar to what Nujabes did. Maybe try checking him out.
But yeah, usually the good kpop songs aren’t the ones being played in mainstream media. I think you’ll also have a better time listening to kr&b artists.
Hell, even BTS has some great r&b songs. Example is Paradise
Basically Mamamoo and Kiss of Life lean more into r&b. Dig deeper into BTS’ discography and you’ll find great r&b songs.
And of course, you can just go straight to kr&b which is a whole different world. Artists like Dean, Heize, DPR, BIBI, and Tabber to name a few; with the latter two having the best overall discographies IMO.
NIN, Mudvayne, Chevelle, RATM, Tool… Might get more specific if I am pissed at a specific thing that has a song that fits that I know of. Mad over a breakup? Might put on All-American Rejects. Capitalism? RATM, Muse, and even Arlo Guthrie.
When you’re angry, what general mood of music do you tend to gravitate to?
I feel like angry uptempo stuff is better for when you are not angry enough about shit. I’ve never sought angry stuff out to reinforce anger, like the anger to me has always seemed like a symptom of boundaries not being in place to prevent greater harms or annoyances
Absolutely NOT to discount anything here but thats my experience which has me curious about your position. Im interested in a general music mood theory but its tough stuff, everyone’s different and it seems challenging to universalize anything to any kind of global benefit or at least nominal effect
Can i break the 4th wall here and ask an example of what makes you so angry? Totally none of my business but do you mind for educational and relational purposes here?

Depends on the group really, especially with the explosion of so many of them. I tend to prefer the ones who have r&b-influenced music.

I asked my friend and it was Pursuit of Happyness - Leessang.
Ah I see, cool. Well either way, if you like Nujabes, Primary would probably be up your alley too.
Can you recommend some good r&b influenced k-pop songs? I’d like to give them a try.
Sure. I don’t want to overwhelm you with links so just a couple off the top of my head:
Mamamoo’s High Tension and Rude Boy
Le Sserafim’s Impurities
Wheein’s Breeze
Kiss of Life’s Chemistry
Natty’s Sugarcoat

Thanks a lot, I’m looking forward to jumping into this new rabbit hole!
What do you think of “warm” stuff?
What do you listen to when youre mad or angry?

First instinct is to listen to something equally angry. I also sing along with everything, so it can help get some aggression out.
But if I am trying to calm down, I would throw on some Lo-Fi Girl stuff or the playlist I use for sleep.
