I said this before and I’ll say it again, if this was a local restaurant, it’d be shutdown. But because it’s much worse and way more profitable, it won’t.

This is not a defense of Taylor Farms, but a discussion about numbers in general.
They are a large producer of produce in the US, supplying 30-40% of the market. They’re making news far more than Fresh Express, Dole, and Brightfarms & Church Brothers are. They also have much more marketshare.
They are not recalling more than their fair share.
And notably, we’re talking about one of the most vulnerable products: prewashed fresh cut greens like lettuce and other vegetables.
The fact that FDA/USDA is able to trace these things back to specific companies is a sign our safety nets are working.
So they are not sick fucks, and if you boycott them because they keep having recalls, I recommend boycotting pretty much every single brand of fresh vegetable that exists, because they all have recalls.
Do you remember how people were making fun of the lady whose genitals were fused because of the McDonald’s hot coffee? Similar thing here. This is making news, and rightfully so, but these guys are as safe as the industry as a whole, and the whole point is that recalls are part of our safety net.

It’s almost like while vertical integration can maximize a corporations profits, it means a single problem fucks up the entire nations food supply…
And that we need government regulations to ensure we have options, which also ensure there’s competition between suppliers, resulting fair prices.
If a single corporation supplies the majority of produce, they can charge whatever the fuck they want.n it’s effectively a monopoly because one when supplier goes down, the few others can’t fill the gap.
This a problem that either needs fixed, or will keep having worse and worse consequences.
That’s not vertical integration. Vertical integration is when a single company owns the supply chain end to end, e.g. if Sysco also owned and operated the farms and restaurants. Or Ticketmaster owning the artist/label, ticket platform, and venue. Owning a broad part of one step is horizontal integration (often approaching a market with few or no competitors).

We HAVE regulations, which is why this was caught and a recall issued.
I made a longer comment, but this company is not worse at safety - they are just a very large provider of products that are inherently harder to keep safe (fresh cut vegetables are more susceptible to problems). The news is going wild about them because it makes news, and that means people think they’re evil and therefore even more newsworthy.
Our system is working.
Things like this are ALWAYS going to happen. The only think you could do is force companies to be a maximum size, which would reduce efficiency of things like testing and make it harder to catch and harder to recall effectively. One nice thing about it being a large effect is that it’s easier to get th word out and successfull recall the affected foods.
So while some conclusions are logical to draw, some of them are wrong - like the meme about the bomber showing where they were hit — and survived to land back at base. You want to armour where they DIDN’T make it back to base. It’s not a strictly applicable metaphor, but if we suddenly had zero recalls, for example, THAT would mean we’re not testing well enough. That we are is the system working.
Taylor Farms is using slave labor to work their farms. If you think a slave is going to make sure your produce is planted, irrigated, picked, washed, and packaged correctly? No, they are going to take a shit right on top of your salad and serve it to you with a smile. Also, study after study finds slave labor is never more profitable than paid labor of any kind.
Edit: Slavery is profitable only if you are willing to literally do torture, summary executions, mutilation, organ harvesting, and so much more to dehumanize the individual. Places like Uyghur in China, or Palestinians in Palestine. But here in America, people that won’t that aren’t willing to do it themselves.

I saw no reference in this article of the $1.50/hour cap that Arizona inmates receive working for The Diarrhea Lettuce company - formerly known as Taylor Farms.
Though that was the case with the recent iceberg lettuce diarrhea catastrophe, which has made thousands sick and killed two people.
There is no excuse for coercing prison inmates to work effectively as slaves. Also, it’s clear that FDA regulations are lacking, endangering all residents.
Yup. Agriculture slavery has been proven to be wildly more than paid labor. Taylor Farms could have picked up a book and learned that many studies have been done on this. Before the tractor was invented yes. But now, it’s a sunken cost at every level. Paying someone $1.50 an hour sounds great, but transporting one slave requires at least one guard. All prisons require a 6 to 1 ration for safety. No guard is going to sit on a horse in 100 degrees weather for less than $100k a year. You have to pay for transportation. Slaves don’t give a shit about your margins. They are going to smash, eat, crush, steal, and destroy as much procduct as they can get away with. And finally, slaves don’t care if your product is safe. They are going to rightfully be sabotaging every aspect of your business.

Any veg that is harvested is done so by humans. One things human need to do is shit during the day. One thing farmers hate is installing any kind of plumbing in the fields so they bring portable toilets on trailers. Sometimes the toilets are broken or full and someone needs to shit real bad so they shit on the edge of the field where no one is looking. The poop is covered by dirt and tracked on shoes through the rows of veg.
This is how human waste gets on vegetables. Farmers don’t have the right facilities to handle humans and waste ends up on the food.
Also spraying cow shit or having cow shit near the body of water used to water crops.
Oh but we humans are totally building a Mars colony, though. Just as soon as we figure out how to stop pooping on our food.

It’s a common problem on farms which don’t provide adequate bathroom facilities for their laborers and/or don’t allow a reasonable amount of time to use those facilities. Or to put it a different way: if your boss screams at you for being lazy and threatens your job every time you leave the field to use the toilet, you tend to just start shitting in the field.
