Stupid idea, the only time a vehicle should be there is for delivery before opening hours.
Yeah, that’s a stupid move. Probably someone rich enough wants to drive their Lamborghini there. Probably with a couple of prostitutes in the back.
I particularly liked the Urbanist’s op-ed on this, that was posted in !seattle@lemmy.sdf.org which really drives home the point that everyone, both pedestrians and businesses alike, are overwhelmingly in of leaving the market car-free, and we’re really doing this for like, one hypothetical grocery shopper who almost certainly doesn’t actually exist
The latest survey from the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), conducted this past June, heard from 5,403 people and found “98% Support: Near-universal community backing for vehicle barriers.” Importantly, the survey also heard “96% Business Agreement: High alignment among local merchants and staff” among 224 respondents.
Limiting general car traffic in the Market is as close to complete political consensus as Seattle is going to get on anything. Support spans the spectrum of Seattle politics from The Stranger and Mayor Wilson, to the Seattle Times and former Mayor Bruce Harrell.
Oh fuck no, that was not a street for cars to begin with.

It sounds like a ludicrous idea, but when you rant think about it, the pedestrians most-threatened by this and likely to avoid the area as a result are mostly just the out of town tourists whose spending props up the entire region of the city.
