I believe we are in the age of one-term presidents, and this is why. The system is failing people, and whoever’s in charge is going to get blamed the hardest. Four years is enough time for enough voters to forget how much they hate they other party, or if they remember, then their frustration with them is on the back burner.
So long as nobody does shit about the cost of living, voters will keep trying to punish whoever’s in charge.
What would they even do about the cost of living? It’s not like the companies are all going to lower their prices. My entire life the cost of living has only ever gone up. Never down. The only way to make it better would be if everyone got generous raises but the ruling class says that will make it worse
Mamdani is trying to implement government run grocery stores. That’s something isn’t it?
The goal is for cost of living to go up along with wages or dollar value. Remember a nickel in the 40’s was not a little bit of money. Now we hardly even think about it. And I hope your employer is at least giving cost of living raise. Don’t stay at a company that goes years on end without giving any increase.
Where there’s a will, there’s a way. The government could chose to spend money helping people in any number of ways, but it’s always “how you gonna pay for it?” Meanwhile there’s a blank check for building bombs to be dropped on Yemen, Iran, or Palestine.
Give us universal healthcare so people don’t go bankrupt and lose their houses when they develop a health problem. Maybe build some of those cheap, commieblock apartments that we can rent for like 6% of our income instead of a third or more. Build public transit so we don’t have to spend tons of money buying and maintaining cars. Subsidize essentials like groceries. If we weren’t pouring a trillion dollars a year into terrorizing brown people on the other side of the world, we could afford to do basically anything.
All of those are things that other governments have done, but here in the States we’re so used to the government doing fuck-all to the point that people start thinking it isn’t even possible for the government to help anyone. But if you look at other countries, or at history, there’s plenty of stuff they could do if they wanted to.
