I’ve been thinking more about that quote, and realizing I like characters in media that exemplify it.
People who don’t just say “I don’t want to fight” to look humble, but because they view any battle as a tragedy of destruction - but could still wipe the floor with anyone.
So often, the “big stick” part of the quote is viewed with importance and finality, when the beginning about walking (edit correction: speaking) softly is perhaps more important.
Yeah, I’ve always interpreted the phrase as essentially meaning “don’t start shit, but be prepared to finish it.”
IRL Teddy Roosevelt was rather an imperialist sadly. Started the whole “world police” bullshit.
And he himself was an NYPD chief.
I don’t fault TR for US imperialism. It would probably have morphed into the empire that it is, even without his influence. He was never the kind of person who would run away from a fight, as long as he thought he was on the right side of it. Sometimes, he may have been a little too eager for one.
He had integrity and high moral standards, even if his “take the bull by the balls” approach wasn’t always the best way. Still my favorite US president.
