While I agree especially for Obama, I’m not quite sure that holds with “we finally beat Medicare” Biden. Especially towards the end.

More than a little ridiculous to claim Biden’s misspeaking during the debate is in any way comparable to “they’re eating cats and dogs”.

Biden was in bad shape the way that a grandpa who has been running the family hardware business for fifty years gets a little bit confused about whether or not he called the guy about fixing the leaky roof, but by God grandpa is going to be at work seven days a week selling wrenches and screwdrivers and absolutely fucking refuses to take a vacation, let alone retire, even though there are younger people who are more than ready to take over.

Trump is in bad shape like a football player who got drafted out of high school, was hustled through his college classes on the basis of his football scholarship, and then took so many blows to the head that his brain looks like a dried lotus pod.

Neither is good, but there is a meaningful difference.

They’re eating cats and dogs was straight demagoguery. It’s like the Nigerian prince scams. It was rational for him to say that. Horrible, but rational.

Rational in a purely self serving sense at the cost of all else. I’m not sure rationality is doing the hard work here.

It was just one of the more well known examples and it is an example of not having control over your thoughts to even form a coherent statement that’s relevant to what you were just saying. The whole they’re eating cats and dogs isn’t a great example as it unfortunately is a coherent statement that he intended to make, it wouldn’t make someone suggest you take a cognitive test, they’d just think what we all think about it “you’re a lying racist piece of shit peddling conspiracy theories some asshat lied about to suit your narrative.”

I’m not trying to defend Trump in any way whatsoever, but Biden was absolutely declining in front of us. Either way, denying it or embracing it doesn’t change where we’re at so it’s kinda pointless to argue. I was just commenting on the statement that there was no reason to test Biden when I think it could have been justified.

Yes, and now it’s happening again only this time the party doesn’t care, no one is able to shore up anything, and the majority of the government apparatus is in serious danger.

“Change is going to happen. Change that we can’t even think of right now. The things will happen and I believe for the best. Hopefully for the best, but I believe for the best.

But things will happen that you can’t even imagine. And it’s going to be very exciting, but the way that’s going to happen is through thinking big.

Nothing great was ever built, think of that. Nothing great was great was ever built without the word momentum at your side. In times of your life, you’ll have momentum. That’s the time you go for it.”

There is a difference between cognitive decline and just being a racist piece of shit.

“Beat medicaid” was cognitive decline. That wasn’t a misspeak. His brain was mash potatoes that entire debate. That was just the funniest one. The really pathetic “sad slow confused old man” one’s aren’t as memorable.

Trump saying “eating cats and dogs” is literally just him being a racist piece of shit. That wasn’t cognitive decline. Unless you think JD vance is showing old age cognitive decline.

Having said all that. They are both racist old white men with signs of dementia. The counter example you gave is just not a good example for Trump.

The difference is that Biden actually surrounded himself with competent people. Trump surrounds himself with enablers.

yes, but this is nothing new. Reagan was basically cognitively absent in a significant portion of his last term, and many believe his wife essentially took the role of the presidency. This has been talking point among democrats for decades now, so there was a lot of “revenge” coping going on with Biden. His cognitive state is not truly known. The books, like Tappers, have provable false information them. However those within the west wing at that time have things against their stated evaluation on Biden’s competency. We, unfortunately, have no idea how bad it was, and all the outpouring of statements against him, and in his defense, are too full of intentional disinformation to really know, at this point. I imagine that some years from now there will be information that comes to light that cuts through a lot of this obfuscation, and we will have closer answers. Right now too many parties have interest in it being not known. I think if there was clear records of his decline in the records from the white house, Trump would be parading them around. So we shall see.

He could actually speak coherently. Are we seriously comparing a couple gaffes with a constant stream of sentence fragments?

Biden’s final debate performance was pretty awful. Seemed lost a couple times. Nothing like the guy who had debated Paul Ryan years before. It was so bad that he had to drop out.

I had multiple grandparents at different states of decline from dementia during the fateful debate. Those weren’t his usual stutter nor a simple misspeaking, that was his brain being unable to connect the partial fragments of thoughts and voice them. Aka dementia.

Trump’s also showing clear cognitive decline, but he’s also much more obviously very hopped up on medications for all of his public speaking engagements. There’s a ~4 week cycle of him having a poorly covered up bruise from an IV in his hand, about a week of him hidden from the public eye, then about 2 weeks of him doing noticably better then he starts declining again for the last week before the next dose during which he gets hidden from the public eye again. They schedule all of his biggest public engagements during that 2 week window

I am not comparing him to Trump, Trump is clearly spiraling out of control. The problem is he had proof of problems and they hid them. No one knows the degree, so it is being used by anyone who can make money from it to postulate that he was basically either unaware of what was happening around him, or being sharper than most people in their 20s, neither was true. At some point we may learn what was happening.
