I know most of you want to answer IGNORE REDDIT!!, WE ARE SO MUCH BETTER!!, USE ONLY THE FEDIVERSE!! which I do, but there are several problems with it:

the fediverse sometimes looks like a cult, only a marxist one: China and Russia are good, there are concentration camps in Ukraine, Ukraine belongs to Russia, like Taiwan belongs to China, Israel is a genocidal state, China is so much better than the US…

Some mods on lemmy show the same level of intolerance as some mods on reddit.

I stopped using reddit years ago but I still lurked because some communities there, mostly the non ideological ones, don’t have an alternative: on lemmy there are so many subs with absolutely no content, or one post written 4 years ago, 20 users and 1 visitor per month. That’s not an active community.

reddit won’t stop its enshittification but for the time being there is no alternative for the communities I’m interested in, mostly non ideological ones about medicine, nursing, philosophy, religion, dementia, autism, biology…

And I’m not looking for communities were medicine, biology or dementia are used as an excuse to rant against the current POTUS or to introduce me to the greatness of communism, I really only care about the topics I mentioned.

For some websites that require a log in I use archive.ph but I don’t see how this would work with reddit.

Any ideas? I’m not creating an account with reddit.

Block Lemmygrad, .ML, and Hexbear and that problem basically disappears completely.

Some mods on lemmy show the same level of intolerance as some mods on reddit.

People are the same everywhere. This isn’t an issue you will ever not run into.

Good luck finding non-ideological discussions on these subjects. Especially philosophy and religion. You don’t get that on reddit, either.

      I don’t understand though.

I don’t block anyone or any instance and the tankies are barely a problem I notice.

They represent a fringe group that gets downvoted to hell whenever they open their mouth.

I really don’t understand this perception that Lemmy is a tankie cult.

However, Israel is a genocidal state, WTF does this have to do with the other things mentionned? It’s the mainstream view.

EDIT: My instance blocks hexbear and lemmygrad and I was blissfully unaware.

You are likely on an instance that blocks them for you, most sane ones do.

Israel is a genocidal ethnostate that needs to be stopped.

Russia and NK both have systematic corruption issues that run deep enough to not believe any of their propaganda, even the stuff made by other nations or interests. With that in mind the corruption itself is obvious and tells of fundamental issues in governance and civil structure on its own.

China ran over thousands of protesting students in Tiananmen and has committed far worse atrocities in the decades since.

The US is a straight up fascist authoritarian state that is on the brink of collapse.

Cuba has managed to become the best sales pitch Communism ever had with their continued resilience in the face of global sanctions and embargo.

        Pineapple is delicious on pizza.

At the end of the day people are going to have opinions on all of that, and the magic of the fediverse is that I can make posts like this to weed them out pretty easily.

All that being said this is still one of the more radically left leaning social spaces regardless of where you happen to fall on the politics personally. I can understand the conflation with tankies just because there is a lot of focus on the same solutions but with wildly different takes on how to implement them.

Redlib is the way to go for lurking Reddit; for everything about social just use Lemmy and contribute to contents and improvements.

RSS still works, sometimes. They seem to be doing something weird with it but have not cut it off entirely. You can take individual subreddit URL’s, add “/.rss” to the end, and use that in an RSS reader.

You will only get links and post text, you won’t get any comments.

I don’t see any reason to ever use Reddit at all, tbh. They’ve become nothing more than a clog on search engines.

You can subscribe to reddit users and subs by subscribing to the rss feed. Just add /rss to the end of the community or user URL. Then input that rss URL into the RSS reader of your choice.

You can also use a redlib instance. Here is a list of instances.

The easiest way to use redlib seamlessly is to use the Libredirect browser extension. It has redlib setup and you just have to configure it to use certain instances in the settings. It works on any desktop/laptop with the standard Firefox/chromium based browsers and also on Android with any Firefox version that allows developer tooling/add-on store.

It’s probable reddit might lock down rss feeds and is probably trying to figure out how to limit or stop the scraping redlib does, but for now they work, and work well.

Didn’t from me. Maybe that depends on where you are.

I used to make a new account 2-3 times a year and abandon the previous one. I always used one of those “10 minute email” services to make the account. Had no problems with it. Last account I made a was about 2 weeks ago. And that will be my last, since I assume they are going to get rid of old.reddit completely, they hinted at such in their recent blog post thing. So when that happens, its byebye reddit forever.

    You can use redlib instances

    https://github.com/redlib-org/redlib#instances

You can subscribe and filter out subs. Go into settings and you can set the UI to wide so text fills the width of the screen like old.reddit instead of wasted side padding.

And you can save your settings by copying some text that is generated to use across various redlib instances and have your subscriptions and filters set without having to set up it manually again.

Old reddit still working fine here with no login. Try Firefox and Ublock origin if you haven’t already.

They’re rolling it out piecemeal. For a while after people started reporting that they now needed a login, I was still able to get to both.

Now there’s no way around it for me.

It’ll happen to you, @korthrun@piefed.social, and everyone else eventually.

And no combination of Incognito, uBlockOrigin or noScript cancelling or deleting elements will grant me access.

However, I do notice that they have an “e-mail me a one time link” option, and I haven’t tested if they block temporary e-mail services, so if you’re really desperate, maybe that will work.

Although I recommend not bothering with Reddit any more. Let it die.

Same here, both old.reddit.com and the new layout (i.e. just reddit.com) work fine for me without a login. All I have to do is dismiss the little flyout that asks if I want to login using google.

Even in Chrome. Even without Ublock origin. Even from the USA, without a VPN.

Ready for the incredibly complex fully elite hack? CAN YOU HANDLE IT?! DO YOU HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY?

      Private browsing/incognito mode.

ETA: With the large variety of responses in this thread, I’m really curious if this works for other people or if I’m just super lucky.
