People who care about downvotes confuse me

And it’s so much easier to take the L in the fediverse (assuming you can live with making something people don’t like). I’ve got a few comments that were bad/not well received and felt no obligation to delete them out of shame.
Piefed has a dedicated button for “Oops, I fucked up with this one”. It adds a disclaimer that you changed your mind and locks the thread without deleting it.
I’ve been downvoted into the dirt a few times. It just means folks don’t have a homogenous opinion. As long as someone isn’t getting downvoted for bigotry, it’s fine and disagreement is okay.
Lemmings can be some of dumbest people alive but also smarter than 99% of the planet (let’s stop pretending America is the only country doing stupid things)

Nope, me either. Either try to clarify if there was a misunderstanding, which can be its own battle as people dig in very easily on the internet and don’t reread and realize it wasn’t what they thought. Or just let it be and move on, you said what you said.
Granted I have had a few rare deletions, but only because I totally missed the point and only saw it after posting. I do try to read over before hitting that button.
When I first moved to the Fediverse, I discovered that my comments didn’t actually delete. That is, I used to use the then-new Sync for Lemmy, and every time someone deleted their comment, it would still show the original comment, but flag it as “deleted by creator” or something like that.
I noticed some people got around that by editing their comment to just be a period or something and then deleting it. But I learned early on to be sure of my posts before posting, and not to bother arguing with people online as your comments might come back to haunt you if you were in the wrong. Once it’s posted online, it might as well be permanent. It’s much better to own up to your mistake in the comments than try to delete your comments.
I use Voyager for Lemmy now and I don’t see deleted comments anymore with this app. But I suspect they’re still in the system, recorded for posterity on someone’s instance.
Only time I delete is if I’ve broken a rule… because apparently I’m lawful good?

Luckily there is no algorithm here, at least in the commonly expected sense with modern social media. You can sort and filter posts by various schemes, but it’s clearly deterministic and the post rate around here is slow enough that you can get it to consistently return the exact same result set in the exact same order multiple times.
Your instance is not tracking what you view, hover, and click on in order to profile you to serve you more of anything else.
Same here, but it’s risky since a semi-regular user recently got banned for what seems like no reason. My guess is his talking about Admiral Patrick and was culled. The user has no idea what happened, just woke up banned.
Are there tools that scrape your account and let you download your posts, comments and uploaded media?

I feel you, my thought exactly. Which is why it’s nuts someone is allowed to shadow antagonize and everyone is expected to ignore it.
As for tools, I’m pretty sure there but I haven’t done it myself, sorry. But given recent events, I probably should look into it.
That sucks, but switching to another (friendlier) instance is always an option.

We aren’t talking about money here. Or anything of real value. We’re talking about interacting with randos on the internet. It’s fun. It’s interesting. It is completely superfluous and not necessary. Fedihosting Stichting could decide they don’t wanna bother with this any more, and a large chunk of the fediverse goes poof. There is no permanence on the internet. Even the archives are spotty. I’ve cycled through so many aggregators, forums, IRC channels, XMPP whatever from the early internets to now. It all turns to mulch eventually. Meta will ditch facebook once enough of the olds die off. Reddit will be another Digg someday. So, getting a ban and getting butthurt over it is simply not worth the energy. I’ve given my share of fucks and none of it mattered. This too doesn’t matter.
I think you have a few things a bit misunderstood.
Loosing $40 to learn someone you thought was a friend is actually a piece of shit, is honestly rather cheap. You know not to ever trust them with anyone or anything again. Now, saying that, you barrow $40 from me and don’t pay it back you’ll never see so much as a kind word spared for you in the future. I’ll not be upset though. Seems your integrity is worth less than a good bag of weed. Says more about you than i think you understand.

Having to make a new account takes about 1 minute so that’s probably worth about 50c, if you stole two quarters from my wallet I would most likely not even notice, unless it happened 50 times.

I post based on what makes ME happy. And maybe based on some recommendations from whatever small audience enjoys my stuff. I don’t give a shit about algorithms. If my stuff doesn’t become popular overnight, oh well. If I lose followers because I don’t post regularly, whatever. I enjoyed making it anyway and I’ll continue posting whenever I personally feel motivated to do so.
Future archivists can find my various content and enjoy it all in one sitting, but I won’t be pressured by corporations to keep pumping out sub-par content just to keep an algorithm going so they can make ad money off me.
Europeans got it right; work when you want to, take a few months off in the summertime to go travel/fishing/relaxing, and your business will be open whenever you’re available. That’s the philosophy I live my life by.

In certain communities, some people are known for posting specific types of content regularly.
For example, I started a series of essay-style video game reviews in a games community and they were pretty popular for a while. But I’m not updating them nearly as much as I used to, so I’ve just become another anonymous member on Lemmy now. Which is fine, I’m doing it for me, not for any Internet accolades.
Which reminds me, I should probably make a new one of those. It’s been a while.
